This link may help - it does seem to suggest that outright purchase is possible. There is no indication of whether it is locked or unlocked.

The question is how much did you pay??? No pricing information on Apple's site.

16gb black or white $879 AUD
32gb Black or white $1040 AUD

They are completly unlocked
I phoned them yesterday as im going over next month
Plus you can also claim the GST back at the airport

So from my calculations it would be $1056 nzd for 16gb
then get a $100 appx gst back

total cost $956 NZD

i did some searching around and it seems that they do sell it outright at apple stores... only them tho... and the prices are
16gb = 879
32gb = 1040

and you will get further 10% off as you go through TRS (gst) at the airport... meaning it will be way cheaper to do that if you are planning to get one and is going over to aus!!
hmmmmm now shall i just do that! :P

scho047: I rang the store prior to going there and they confirmed it was unlocked. Try yourself if you want to be sure. I also explained when I purchased it that I was going to use it NZ and they said it should work as it was unlocked, but if it failed I needed to bring it back to Melbourne for swapping.
I already have an XT account with SIM so plugged it it. Until I downloaded the settings from this forum things like MMS were not available. I also had to restart the phone before MMS worked.
I didn't try Aus SIM at all. I just tried my PrePay Vodafone NZ SIM andd it allowed me to make calls OK.

In terms of price it was $1040 AUD for the 32GB and the 16GB is $867 AUD
Take 10% GST of when you refund at the airport and convert to NZ.
I haven't yet got the full Visa bill through yet but my calculation is approx $1175NZ for 32GB version.

hmmmmm now its just matter of twisting my arm to see if i should get it... when i already have iphone 3g! :P hahaha... well i suppose i could give it to my family as a pressie :P

I guess only if you declare. And I don't think it's GST. There could be an import duty??? It's a personal item bought. Would you pay GST if you bought a camera overseas? Either way these individual personal items aren't usually subject to taxes.

There is no NZ accessible warranty for an Australian purchased iPhone. If something goes wrong you will have to go back to an Apple Store in Sydney or Melbourne to get it assessed.

They don't accept couriers either, so you (or a friend) will literally have to get on a plane.

Is that risk worth the $200???

Re. the +64 thing... I haven't Jailbroken mine (yet) - so I have gone thru' my contacts & added a +64 version of the people who I'm likely to get a phone call or text from. Note - it seems you'll need your contacts to have a listing as 021 XXX XXX to see who's calling when they phone you PLUS a listing for them that has their number listed as +64 21XXX XXX so you'll see who has sent you a text. Not very elegant, but it works & didn't take too long to do it on my Address Book on the computer.

Ok, i have read all the posts here but I have a delemer.
I have an iPhone 3G on Telecom XT network - running O/S 3 and iTunes 8.2
How do I get your icpp file onto my phone? O/S 3 iPhones requires 8.2 iTunes to work?? at least thats what it said when I connected up my phone to an iTunes 8.1

The only way to fix the +64 problem at the moment is via a jailbreak (redsn0w/ultrasn0w) and installing the cydia callerid fix package. (Unless you want to retype in all your contacts)
