I'm a 2Degrees prepay customer, and I manage to scrape by with 50MB of data per month. This costs me $6 for a 50MB pack that lasts 30 days. And this is with knowingly using my iPhone for 3G data occasionally.
If you are an infrequent data user, you may want to check to see if your mobile provider can offer you a similar data pack.

Could it be that da5id is on the prepay casual rate, i.e. you get charged $1 a day up to 10MB even though you may only be using 1KB? ?

I doubt that Vodafone were previously supplying you with free data that they suddenly decided to charge for. The more likely explanation is that something has changed on the phone, causing your data usage to increase.
I think OP is referring to when Vodafone had a block on the APN iphone-vodafone.co.nz(or something like that) and anyone not on a plan was stopped from using data.
Vodafone then disabled this so that data will go through for anyone on that APN. There was a forum post here about it around the time they changed it.

Yes, that's right. I'm on prepay, and both Vodafone and Telecom will charge $1 a day for 10MB of casual data, irregardless of how much you use. Thus 1KB of data is enough to incur a $1 charge...
My iphone seems to use about $1 of data every time i turn mobile data on and i don't know why? I suspect it is apps automatically connecting to the app store to see if there is an update?
So i have the question.. Do some apps automatically connect to the app store when mobile data is on with no option for turning this feature off? If so that sucks.
