I still think where being grossly overpriced by at least $100 - $150 of extra unexplained cost.

So what if a product doesn't have the same price in market A as it does in Market B. When I last checked there was no gun to anyone's head making them buy an iPhone in Market A or B.

SO WHAT if it's more expensive here? And why wouldn't any rational supplier use pricing to balance supply and demand?

You don't like it? Tough. I want to buy a Lotus Elise, but they are so much cheaper in the UK. It's not fair! Waaah.

No-one owes you an explanation on any price difference. You on the other hand as a consumer have EVERY RIGHT to buy or not buy the phone. You even have the right to parallel import from another country and save big bucks.

If you think it is too expensive, just don't buy it. If apple think they aren't selling enough due to high prices, or people buying android devices instread, they may be forced to drop the price. eg vote with your feet if you aren't happy.

putting aside whether the price in NZ is fair compared to the US price.... is the iphone good value for money at any price?

I think the price is/will be fair. There are other countries that are even more expensive, Brazil was traditionally one of them. It is the mobile plans that is not. But now with the networks competing we are stating to see some value.

mattwnz is right. And to be blunt, I'd say one is not paid enough if they complain about the pricing of NZ iPhones and there are other alternatives - or you can source it overseas if you can not justify paying locally. Regardless Apple will still sell out every single phone they can make for the next couple months after launch day at whatever price they set.

freitasm: The local prices are not even announced so the comparison is pointless at the moment.

The prices were announced on Thursday.

iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate, and will be available in New Zealand for a recommended retail price of NZD$1049 inc. GST for the 16GB model, NZD$1199 inc. GST for the 32GB model and NZD$1349 inc. GST for the 64GB model.

I guess you could address the OP's original question by asking "What price should a device whose components and labour mean it costs (say) $400 to produce be sold for?" It will sell for whatever the vendor thinks they can get for it. Apple are in business to make money not friends, and the iPhone (from memory) makes up more than half their device revenue. There is only a very small margin for the retailer on these devices, which is why the price of the iPhone 5 will remain at these levels until next August, when they may drop $50 or so, in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 6 (or 5S or whatever).

A good product, excellent marketing and complete control over supply means it's a case of pay what's asked or miss out.

The iPhone business alone is worth more than the entire Microsoft...

Apple pretty much dictates everything on the platform, including how much an operator will charge for the phone.

What gets me is the NZ$ price and US$ price. 64GB is worth $1349, same as last and previous year from memory, give or take. Exchange rate is circa 83 cents now. NZ$ price stays same.

They don't getcharged the tax we do over here though do they? About half the money you pay for petrol is tax, which also pays for the roads etc, which means we don't have too many toll roads.

But for a person that has to have the iPhone 5 it's a bit like the price you pay for petrol. The choice is take it or leave it. The irksome part of it may be that all the iPhone's competition has benefitted from the improved exchange rate. So when price does matter in the equation Apple may miss a sale, but there will always be the next person in the queue ready to stump up the cash, or at the very least sign their life away on a 2 year deal.
