Guess that means that turn-by-turn should be pretty decent then? I haven't used Tom Tom here, but I know they sell lots of GPS devices here over the years. I always see them in DSE, Noel Leeming, etc...

I've been using the Tom Tom app for a few years on my iPhone and it's been really very good.
If they are a partner in the Apple maps venture, I expect good things...

spacedog: So this thing about tapping the current location and it automatically switches waypoints....that's on the Apple Maps, right?

Because that is my biggest gripe about the current Maps app on the iPhone....mine never automatically updates as I pass each way point....

Yes it's on iOS 6 gm. The waypoints look like your typical navigation system ones, a lot clear than previous ones. No voice turn by turn on iPhone 4

Tom Tom used to source map data from Geosmart for NZ. If they're using that source they should be current and accurate as Geosmart have had there own vehicle down every road in the country.

No - sorry should have been clearer no turn by turn voice or graphical, just graphical waypoints that change as you move on map, I have not tested, but naturally this also means no redirection, rerouting if you move of planned trip. Still it's better than was there before. I am looking forward to trying on the iPhone 5, just waiting to see what pricing is on a plan, my 2 year contact on the iPhone 4 has just expired!!

Has anyone got the public transport route finder to work? Worked ok on Google maps in ios5 but on ios6, I am directed to the app store to buy a third-party app for finding public transport route in the US.

Yeah, no public transit currently in iOS6 maps.

I installed it today on my iPad and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Business data is definitely outdated. I went through and reported every closed business in my neighbourhood. Apple has made it very easy to report map data problems, so it seems they are thinking about map improvement through crowd sourced data. I think that is a very good thing for the long term future of iOS Maps. The question is will they be listening and how fast will they update.

I drove out to some parts of East Tamaki in Auckland today that are new roads created in the last several years and the maps were 100% perfect. So the road data seems quite current. The turn-by-turn and voice directions worked very well on my iPad (3rd gen). Auto-routing seemed to work good, too.

The data is clearly not as complete as google. However, I had two major gripes with the old google maps app for the iphone:

-No auto-route
-Waypoints did not automatically advance

As maps was most essential to me for driving directions, this is, in fact a big improvement for me.

However, there are definitely shortcomings. If Google releases a Maps app that was equivalent to the Apple version in iOS5 and earlier, then everyone can be a happy camper.

Nope. MapData Sciences (www.nowwhere.com.au) provides the data.

For me this whole maps thing is over blown. I probably used Google Maps about 3 times a year and relied on Sygic for directions by car. Just use Google Maps in Safari until Google releases the app.

Its not overblown, Apple have taken something that worked and royally ballsed it up purely to snipe at Google.

A lot of location based stuff that people are increasingly using has become utterly useless.

I don't see anything in that article you quote that affirms your claim:

I haven't heard of reports of it breaking other apps as most of the apps still use google's data so they continue to work.

I completely agree that there are problems and iOS Maps needs a ton of work, but just trying to temper the technosphere's outrage in comparison to the real-world every-day non-techie impacts.
