wellygary:Jarno: , as the price of an iPad is well above the limit where GST is waived, will still apply on import.
Only if he had is posted,
As a traveller you have a $700 personal goods concession that a 16GB iPad would fall within, so no GST would be payable if he had it with him....
nova:dickytim:nova: Another option is for your brother to buy it retail in Australia and then claim the GST back when he flys out, under the Tourist Refund Scheme:
http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp
This can be used by residents as well, and he can buy it up to 30 days in advance. If he bought at target for $499 AUD, this is $455 after refund or about $570 NZD.
There is still an issue with warranty if you buy this way, so depends on if that is a concern or not.
$539 AUD or $490 duty free, only a couple of $$ in it really. less than $100 for a 3g version.
Well, it is a little better than that, as you can get it cheaper from some stores. For example Target is $40 cheaper than full retail:

The main advantage is that you get to use it and set it up before the trip. Well, your brother does. You should lease it to him for a month for a small fee! :-)
sidders80: I have bought an ipad2 from australia. It had a problem and needed to be replaced. Called apple care who happily replaced it for me. I did mention I bought it from australia and the lady said its fine it is covered. Second time the ipad 3 or the new ipad that I bought from jb here I had it with me in melbourne two weeks ago. It seemed to be dropping wifi every now and then. Took it to apple store in chadstone mall and guess what they happily replaced it too. so warranty is not an issue.
Elpie: Does anyone know if an iPad bought duty free will come with iOS 5.1.1 or iOS6?
I'm so seriously frustrated by my iPad 2 on iOS6 I'm considering replacing it. BUT only if a new iPad is not running iOS6. (Actually, so frustrated I want to smash the darned thing to smithereens).
Cheers,
Mike

What exactly is the problem? I have 2 iPad (2's) running iOS6 perfectly fine, as well as an old iphone 4 and iPod touch. In fact i would say they are running even better than before.
Apart from frequent crashes and running slower than paint drying on a wet day, I'm having two major issues that are making it almost unusable for me. Battery life is seriously worse - I used to charge every 2-3 days. Without changing use at all (actually, I'm using it far less due to the issues) I am now charging 2-3 times PER DAY! This afternoon, for example, I checked & read email, no replying, and had 4 tabs open in Safari as I read some articles. In an hour of doing only that I went from 97% to 44% battery.
The second issue relates to me taking an hour to do that reading - WiFi is not holding connections. It connects up just fine, then drops, then says the network is unreachable, and rinses and repeats. I've tried every workaround out there but can't get past this issue.
On iOS 5.1.1 I had no issues at all.

scuwp:
Oh dear, that's completely opposite to my experience with both our iPad 2's. Only suggestion is to perhaps try reloading the iOS, maybe something went wrong during the install.
scuwp: Back on topic...son brought his iPad in the states a while ago. The shop kindly activated it for him and using free wi-fi managed to get some apps, books, and games on it for his travels. Maybe the airport or Aussie retailer can do the same? Although having recently returned from Aussie I wouldn't bank on it, bad manners and shocking service seems to be the norm now over there. Terrible!
