First of all - a big apology for not updating this thread during the week - I had an extremely busy week and I forgot about this post and I just got on here for the first time since since I found it. Here is the details of how I recovered my iPhone.
(1) Just after I posted my blog post, The 'Find iPhone' app (running on my iPad) said "Your iPhone has been found". It showed the location as not the ice cream shop - but the Paper Plus in Parnell !!
(2) Apparently I have left it on top of the shelf whilst browsing a book in Paper Plus. A shopper picked it up when I activated the 'Play a sound' function and saw the message about it being a lost phone and handed it to the shop owner.
(3) And William the shop owner was kind enough to hand it over to me.
What I still don't understand is how a phone that had run out of charge (my calls to it went to voice mail) managed to get 'online' to report its position to the find my iPhone App - but I don't care - now that I got it back.
Moral of the story: If you got an iPhone and if you have not got any tracking software, get one! There are still a lot of honest people out there - make it easier for them to find the owner, if you loose your phone so that they can give it back to you.
SaltyNZ: If someone has picked it up they should be able to find a charger pretty easily. And if not, if they're the kind to return it they'll hand it in to the police. If they're NOT the type to return it... well, sooner or later they will plug it in. At that point it will email you, and you can ask the police to go round and visit.
sorry to tell you the Police will not do a thing, I told them where the phone was, who owned the building and who the tenants were and all they did was send me a form to send to the insurance company and said they couldn't help.
I ended up phoning the trust that owned the house and they went in and got the phone back for me!
Solving crimes is not high on the agenda for the police these days.
There seems to be a misconception in this country that the Police can go into any building at any time with little or no evidence to back up accusations, they can not. Rules must be followed, criteria must be meet.
If you, dickytim, reported this over the phone then most likely you were dealt with by the Crime Reporting Line or the File Management Centre for your district. They would forward your complaint file on for investigation if there were lines of enquiry. This process can take time. In the future I would suggest going to your local station with all relevant evidence in hard copy and speaking with an officer directly, a switched on officer or senior will jump at the chance to pursue that further.

I wouldn't expect the police to enter someones property to retrieve the phone, but a drive by, knock on the door, explain that a missing Iphone was tracked to this location and the owner wants it back!
Next time I will send the rep to the policestation to report the issue.
