You seem to be disregarding the fact that your handsets are subsidised by being on a plan. Please add the cost of your plan over the 2 year contract.
I believe there were plans for the SGSII that got you the phone for free , so if you sell it for $100 you are making money? :/

I'm sorry???? Add the cost of the plan over 2 years - There are some morons who get a plan they don't need to get the iphone "free" but I'm not that stupid. I pay $170 per month for UNLIMITED calling to landlines and mobiles, before this I had a plan with 400 included minutes for $120 per month and I never spent less than $250 with extra calling, I often spent $400 in a month with over usage. So I consider this new plan damn good value (for NZ) so I really do consider the Phone free, they don't have a version of this plan without handset subsidy as far as I could find as I did consider buying a phone outright. I just took a look and I've done 1100 minutes this month and I have 11 days left!.

I got a 32GB phone which costs $1200 retail so over a 24 month contract thats $50 per month - I'd like to see a $120 unlimited calling plan but I don't think you'll find one so I really considered the deal great value. If I can turn around after 2 years and sell it for $500 as its a 32GB model I'll be stoked.

I think Samsung and the likes do make their devices appear obsolete rapidly by not continuing to release Android updates etc so no-one wants anything older than the current or prior model. People are still chomping at the bit to get an iPhone 4 and amazingly I'm seeing 3Gs's going for a couple of hundred and they won't even do 3G when you get them out of the main centers (no 900mhz). I would still happily use my Iphone 4 myself, the main reason I resigned was because I hired a staff member and had to get him a phone and it all coincided with the launch of the Iphone 5. Its faster, has panorama photos and Siri, not deal breakers for me - All nice the have but I'd sooner own an Iphone 4 than a Galaxy S3 - And I spend my days setting Activesync and RDP access up for clients on a wide range of handsets.

Since I don't have access to your phone bill I couldn't possibly know what subsidy you acheive, and I would have to say with your level of usage it may be better to have something permanently wired to your head :-P
My point was, that handset depreciation should be compared on a handset only price. So a $1350 iPhone that sells for $500 two years later has lost $850, more than half its value. But an S3 bought at the same time for $900 and sold for only $100 has lost less although now only worth 11% of its purchase price.

Are you really saying, "Because of what I spend on mobile calling I can have any phone I choose. And I choose an iPhone"? Shouldn't need "Another reason".

I have an S3, iPhone 5 and Note. And despite having free 4G on the iPhone 5 I still don't use it because I find the screen too small and can't use swiftkey. Surely there's a Apple equivalent?

Prices are at a premium level, and certainly the hardware build is great. Margins are low and prices never change, literally almost.

So, if you had an iDevice that cost say $1000, and it was in mint condition, and that it will use the latest iOS version, albeit maybe minus a small number of functions (e.g.iPhone 4, Siri), then it almost makes sense that it commands a high second hand price. ( I notice that refurbs are high compared to a new device. Admittedly an Apple refurb isn't like most others I expect, they are given a new case and screen, whatever faulty part if any is replaced).

On reflection as I write this, that the phone/tablet will use the latest OS is quite a major. You can use a 2012 phone/OS or you can use a 2010 phone and 2012 OS. Or a 2010 phone and the 2013 OS when its out in August. In that way, you have older hardware but the latest OS.

So exactly what is the benefit of a 2010 phone (iP4) running 2012 iOS over 2010 iOS? Apart from a crappy map app :-)
Certainly don't see much gain on our non-iPhone iOS devices (iPads and iPods). Don't get me wrong though, there isn't a tablet to match the iPad or PMP to match the iPod Touch (yet). I'm writing this on an Android tablet (2yo running Jellybean) using 'Overskreen' which allows multiple windows open on the homescreen so I can keep an eye on what else is going on in my live widgets.

Any OS should be better than the older versions, and IMO, with phones being mature these days, its all about the OS and Apps. Some Apps require the later OS

I didn't ever mean to make this topic to be an iOS vs Android war (Which iOS obviously would win ;) ) - It was really an observation that people obsession/lust to own an iPhone was driving the 2nd hand market to stupid levels.

If I was making the choice on Cosmetic appeal I'd go Android easily - I'm getting downright tired of the look at feel of ios as it hasn't changed with the times (Common ios7!) - But on reliability and response I prefer iOS hands down. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that came with Honeycomb - The browser was laggy as hell, especially for forms and crashed nearly every session I used it (couple of hours in front of the telly at night) - The Flash support was a waste of time as it only really worked with Banner ad's - Any flash games I wanted to play were too slow. The email client was ugly and the Activesync support buggy (Constantly checked my mail acting as if I had nothing new even though my phone showed my the 5 new messges sitting waiting). Since I updated it with a supported ICS its a lot better - less laggy all round and slowly getting more polished but personally my comparison is

iOS are slow to release new features and support new technologies but once they are there they are flawless.

Android jumps on new technology in a flash but isn't focusing enough on getting the core functions running flawlessly instead wasting half their energy adding bells and whistles for new features like NFC etc. Apps are slowly catching up and most developers seem to develop for both platforms but you know 100% an app will work on your Ipad - It may not work on your particular Android device due to the fragmentation of the platform.

On the plus side for Android being able to drag and drop media etc on and off without using bloody iTunes is my personal strongest reason to look at Android.

Both have benefits. I wish Apple would add in a few base features that Android has, thats annoying. Toggles, relying less on the Home button by increasing navigation in iOS. Drag and drop, well thats not gonna happen as the Apps own the content not the user, and I am used to that and prefer it. Android is quicker and easier to add content but iOS is still quickish and certainly easy to add/manage it. Oddly I like iTunes. To me its a one stop hub for syncing across all devices, restore, backup. Alas, its time to JB again to pickup where Apple are slow to meet customer need

I had a client recently I talked into getting an Ipad primarily for email while travelling - She spoke to Telecom how told her a Samsung Galaxy Tablet was better (Because they could provide it and make money from the sale) so she got one and rang me to say her Ipad was ready for me to setup.

She HATED it and gave it in disgust to another staff member and told me it was a silly idea - I tried to point out she didn't actually buy what I suggested. The all have Samsung Galaxy phones too due to Telecom's willingness to push them (presumably because they make more margin than selling an iphone) and they "like" them but grumble that the Email at times doesn't sync reliably with their Exchange 2010 server.

Give a novice user an Iphone for email and they LOVE them and never look back - Give them a Galaxy and they'll appreciate the convenience of having a Smartphone but grumble about how confusing it is - eg

"My calendar appointments on my pc come through to my phone but appointments I put on the phone don't come into my pc" - Because you have to pick the right calendar to add appointments to on the device - IOS Supports multiple calendars too but it seems to instinctively pick the Exchange one by default - If someone is using Activesync then 99.9% of the time thats going to be the calendar they care most about.

Any way - I could rant for weeks about what I don't like about Android and I like to think I'm relatively balanced as I do own both - I had an Iphone first, then a Samsung Galaxy Tab, then an Ipad 3 - Since the Ipad 3 the Galaxy just doesn't get used - Its been on load to a client for the last 8 weeks for free.

Most in-OS features, not tickboxes. Tickboxes are the functions, features, etc that matter to an individual user. Any that are missing can be obtained

I struggle to think that iPhone keep good value... losing 60% of its value within 1-2yrs.. is it good?

buying nokia 1110 for $50 and selling it for $30 2 yrs later - that is a good retained value of the product.

I completely agree - I can not see how iPhone can ever be called good value. Good at other things - yes - but not at value.

My 32g iphone 4 was (near enough to) $1200 new. On contract I paid about $800 for it, now its probably worth $450 - 500 (it is in mint condition). So it'd lost $700 in value over 2 years...

My wife just bought a Nexus 4 outright for about $600 brand new. It smokes the iPhone 5 in every way and now I have screen envy (as well as app envy. Would love to run some of the emulators out there. While I'm at it - file system envy too, being able to manage files without itunes would be awesome).

Plus - as she bought the phone outright, she's managing on the $19 per month prepay thing, so is saving aout $40 a month more than me - what's that, another $960 over two years?

iPhone's only appear to have high resale value because they are amazingly overpriced at the outset (can someone explain to me why Apple can't get a $300 ipod touch and engineer into it a cellphone radio without adding $600 to the price?).

My 32g iphone 4 was (near enough to) $1200 new. .

S3 was $1049
S4 will be $1149

iPhone 5 16GB is $1029
iPhone 5 32Gb is $1199

Not sure about the GB on these S3/4 prices, I assume 16GB, maybe 32GB for the S4

So the pricing at the top end is not a lot different, and the same rules of depreciation will apply as with all products. But as the OP states the iDevices seem to hold on a bit better on resale.
