By the way I would not bother with iTunes once you get this going again. Turn on iCloud backup and do updates OTA.

Quick update, I had success at last by deleting the iphone software update and restoring it to a previous version. The phone is now recognised again, so it must have been a corrupt file.

Many thanks to those who helped, its great having a forum like this.

GREAT!

What method did you use to delete the software update? Handy to know for future reference

myopinion: Maybe the downloaded iOS firmware is corrupt. Try deleting the downloaded iOs firmware and re downloading it. You can find this here:

I used this link to find the buried file, then restored to a previous version.

Apple doesn't go out of it's way to tell you where iTunes stores the firmware files it downloads before it updates your iPhone. Should you ever need to access these files, it helps to know where to find them.

Firmware files have an .ipsw extension and can be found at the following locations:

On Windows XP :
Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

On Windows Vista/Windows 7:
Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

On Mac:
~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
