bluedisk: Quick update, I had success at last by deleting the iphone software update and restoring it to a previous version. The phone is now recognised again, so it must have been a corrupt file.
Many thanks to those who helped, its great having a forum like this.
myopinion: Maybe the downloaded iOS firmware is corrupt. Try deleting the downloaded iOs firmware and re downloading it. You can find this here:
