I also just did a quick google, and it turns out you can't claim back sales tax in the US. So if I buy an iPhone 32GB in New York, with sales tax of nearly 9%, and factoring in the exchange rate and potential charges at the NZ border, it's barely worth it, unless I somehow don't end up paying the border charges.

:(

Lizard1977: I have a similar question about buying an unlocked iPhone 5S when I'm in the States next month. The Apple Store lists the 32GB model as $749USD. Does anyone know if this includes US sales tax? If it does, then presumably I can claim the sales tax back at the border. Going by the current exchange rates of about 83c in the dollar, if the listed price includes tax then even with NZ GST paid upon arrival back in NZ it will cost about $900NZD, less than the unlocked price here in NZ. If sales tax isn't added on, then it would be about $1042NZ - still less than the estimated $1200 for an unlocked 32GB model in NZ.

Or have I missed something?

Price doesn't include tax, and NO you cannot claim it back.

I have decided to wait for it to land in NZ (whenever that will be). Hopefully the wait wont be too long.

Thanks for your advice and suggestions everybody.

Hi, so has anyone managed to get a 5s from Australia yet, and were there any problems in making it live on NZ network?
And I really wonder how long they will take to be available in NZ! Probably better to have an NZ warranty....
