This can be done. Download iOS 6.* from any number of websites that archive the IPSW files. Then put the phone in DFU mode and restore it via iTunes....however you may need to source a prior version of iTunes for this to work too.

I did this a few times while running the iOS 7 beta and went back and forth between 7 and 6.

That doesn't work anymore because Apple no longer "signs" 6 (and nobody has figured out how to generate signatures yet).

Dairyxox: I thought you could plug the phone into iTunes and restore from a previous backup?
I'm going to try this soon, I like ios7 but geniusgo has become even less stable (if that's possible) and I can't wait for it to be fixed. Also it will be nice to have a fast phone again

Not anymore. I think they removed that feature years ago. Was only available on really old itunes, can't even remember which one sadly.

Can't you just use something like RecBoot or TinyUmbrella to get the phone out of recovery mode once the restore is done?  That's how I installed iOS 3.1.3 onto my iPhone 3G that was running iOS 5 last year.

You could if you jailbreak. Me, I prefer my warranty :-) I'm sure I will need it soon. Battery dying a fast death!

Bought the wife a 5s yesterday and I wasn't 100% on iOS 7 before buying it but I really like it now.

Give me a pm if you want a mint blue s3 and some cash your way for a trade if it bothers you that much. I would go back to apple for an iPhone 5 with iOS 7

Unfortunately not; the restore won't start in the first place. You were successful on your 3G because it doesn't require a signature, but all iOS 7-compatible devices do require one.

to all those who says you can do something to downgrade to ios6 the answer is no they all don't work, you will just waste your time trying.

secondly there is nothing wrong with ios7. in fact my wife's iphone 4 ran out of battery by dinner time without fail. a couple of days after ios 7 she now has 6% at bedtime. no idea why. so it is at least the same if not better.

thirdly she will regret going to an s4 from a iphone 5 UNLESS she needs a big screen. (if she were a geekzone type person then my premise may not hold true but for someone uploading pics to the internet she will regret it)

Nothing wrong with a S4. prefer it over the Iphone anyday, hence why I gave my 5 to my son (made him pretty popular I can tell you!)

After reading around it seems you're (all) correct that you currently cant downgrade back to iOS6 unless the stars are aligned correctly (you're still on iOS6 OR you've jailbroken previously AND you've got an iPhone 4).

so that simplifies things a bit. Guess i've got to push on with iOS7 for the time being. At least safari has some meaningful under the hood improvements.

mattwnz: WHy don't they like it, it is basically the same OS, just a bit of a facelift. ios7 is the only way they will het life out of their phone anyway, as older versions will stop being supported, so in a year or two, they won't be able to download many apps for it.

It has a few good features that have been a long time coming, but the problem I have with it is that it looks like the colour themes have been designed by a 4 year old with a packet of crayons. I find it hard for people in the business world to be taken seriously when they pull out a phone that looks like it's been designed for children.

To be honest, it's the look that puts me off. Very sesame street. It does have some good features but I haven't played around with it as much. Brain still stuck on IOS6. I do need time to familirise myself with it as I feel when i take my Iphone5 back into the store for battery issue it will no doubt be replaced with a refurbished unit complete with IOS7.

Initially I hated it. Clarity was low. Change to a wallpaper that gives better contrast, make text bold that sorted the visual for me. Battery life was affected. BUT due to some settings turned on such as Bluetooth . Check those. Anecdotally I find battery life unchanged
