tdgeek: Note that you can connect the iPhone to the laptop, open Windows Explorer and copy the photos over as the camera roll will show up. Maybe a step by step note he can keep handy?

Does he have a computer?
You could always use Bittorrent Sync as this will do what you want but you have to sync it to a folder on a computer as it doesn't have cloud storage.

You could also use IFTTT and have it send the photo to Flickr every time iPhoto gets a new photo. Then it is just a case of removing photos from the camera. You can even change the 'recipe' to dropbox etc should things change. No need to use a different iOS app for taking photos.

Flickr has auto upload. Or at a lower resolution setting Google+ does auto upload.

Photostream has a rolling 1000 (I thought it was supposed to be more now).

I use an eyefi card in my DLSR - in doing so you get access to their app, this will dump photos from the camera roll on a pc I designate. No cloud in use with this - if you don't count my automatic crashplan backups.

i tried flickr - it was a minefield!

amazingly you couldn't create an account using ipad! the site was not compatible with ios browsers!

then after creating account it took me a while (slow internet) to configure the account so that no tom dick or harry is able to access his photos! (wow there was about 25 options to show everyone everything that needed to be unchecked)

last thing there is no flickr app for ipad!

can anyone teach me how to set up autoupload and leaving the photos there even after he deletes them on the device?

are they the same set up for ipad and iphone?

what is the easiest way for him to view his photos?

flickrstacker is a good app for ipad.

It seems to have auto upload as well.

Failing that you can use the iPhone app - just looks a little silly being doublesized. And use the auto upload feature on this. You just set the picture on upload to be private only.

If you have a mac, you can turn on the photo stream in iPhoto and it will auto upload photos taken on connected iOS devices whenever you are wi-fi connected. They they stay on your computer and also back up to wherever you back up your iPhoto to :)

maybe try DropBox or SkyDrive as has been mentioned in the thread

if you can't work out to use Flickr how the hell will he :)

Flickr was in fact our Plan B as we started to fill our free Dropbox up too quickly (ie. new kid = too many photos + vids)

Dropbox was Plan A for us and it may well work better for him given the grief you have described with Flickr

Dropbox:

- 5G Free Storage
- Built in Photo Uploader
- No Sharing Settings to worry about
- Viewer is simpler/easier than Flickr too imho

- We also installed the Dropbox PC SW so we have a sync copy of the photos on the PC as well (There is a Mac Version)
- We also have SyncBackFree doing a daily schedule backup to the server + intermittent runs to a portable HDD which we store separately

So 4 copies in All ie. Cloud + PC + Server + Portable HDD
All Automated and All Free = Happy as Larry

Is it just me or does the Dropbox app for iPhone not upload photos in the background?

And once the MEGA app has auto-photo uploads then your storage needs are practically taken care of. But then some people might argue here that it may not be safe and MEGA may be taken down again without warning along with all the files! :)

Yeah background app refresh seems a bit hit and miss sometimes. The most reliable (if a little slow) software I've found is google+

The eyefi software requires the app to be started and visible to work, groan.

Not sure the flickr one, as I don't like using that as a fusing ground.

turns out that flickr has no ipad support. might try the 3rd party app(s) that are suggested

turns out that flickr probably cannot upload existing iphone camera roll, i only see 6 new shots and i'm sure he's taken more than that since i set it up.

so a big fail

checking out BOX. (i got 3 accounts wit 50gb doing nothing). sorry dropbox and 2gb is not enough. yes johnr i can't make someone pay when they have no idea how to use something!

the 1TB with flickr and the labrynth of privacy settings still seem the best. but i guess if box works he could even save his documnents
