Now that I look at my mate's Galaxy Note, maybe the 5.5 would be good... I probably won't be able to wait another 6 months though...

I will be most interested to see how Apple markets the increased screen size after telling its customers for years that small is good.
There is going to need to been some fancy UI trickery to be able to still use the phone single handedly.
Unless Apple intends to do away with their circular home button (fat chance) then 5.5" is going to make for a fairly big handset. The Note at least can squash the shape of its home button to save on bezel space.
As I commented in an iPad mini thread, I'm sure we will get guidance as to what is required, stretching from the 1.5" (est) iWatch to the 10.5" iPad. And on to the Macbook.

Really? Personally I can easily predict how Apple will market it. They will either act as if they've invented the large screen phone format, and just act like they never said anything bad about them, or they will say they never made one before because the technology (screen characteristics etc) just wasn't good enough to make the user experience that Apple buyers deserve and they wouldn't bow to market pressures and release a device that wasn't good enough (but now the technology is there, boy, would you look at what we made!).

I don't really see the big deal here, especially considering that every company is inherently going to say the best things about their own products. Unless you can find a decent counter-example? I've seen much, much worse advertising from other big phone companies (Samsung?).

Now back on topic, I've been pretty happy with my N5 for the last 8 months or so but I'm very tempted to try the 4.7" iPhone.

So just copying the campaign when they released the iPad mini then? I wondered whether they put such great store in being able to reach the top corner with your thumb that they may offer thumb extensions ;-). No, I'm hoping for something a little more innovative from their marketing department, perhaps anthropologic evidence that man's hands have grown larger in the digital age, therefore meaning the time is right to increase the screen size.
UI wise they could*;
Put the navigation controls at the bottom,
Slide notifications up from the bottom,
Have an icon tray at the bottom (like macOS NOT like ....),
Have something like a pop up launcher.

To answer the OP's original question, my last two phones have had 4.7" screens and that is a good balance between screen real estate and pocketability. So the iPhone 6 (4.7) would be my pick. However, for the 'look at me, I've got the latest iPhone' crowd, it will have to be the 5.5.

I hadn't considered that actually, but you're probably right that people in that segment will have to have the larger iPhone.

As to some of your other thoughts, agree that Apple will likely bring some UI change to make life easier with the large screen. Moving notifications would be one idea along those lines as you say. From memory there is evidence they will be doing multiwindow in the developer builds for iOS 8 too.

My 5S is the perfect size for me. I like to have a small device that I take everywhere, and then use the iPad Air when I have the need for a larger device.

There are probably a lot of people in the same position as you. But I fear that the 4 inch screen will go the way of the 3.5. It would be nice if they could retain it rather than go the 6C route. But it doesn't really fit with the select inventory philosophy of Apple. If you want a small screen you may have to settle for an iWatch.

4.7". If there's a 5.5" one I won't be getting these for me of work. We have a 6 Note 2 phones and all but one have all been dropped (because they are too large) or broken in the users pocket. They are just too large for everyday mobile use, for people with normal sized hands.

People dropping their phones is a good thing for apple though, as it means people will buy another to replace it with. I mean without a grippy cover, they are all relatively slippery, being made from smooth glass and metal. It these device manufacturers want to help stop people dropping them, they would make them more grippy.
