I'd get the NAD or momentum if I were you (from your sound type you want). unless you're an audiophile in which case the momentum isn't a high def can but I think it'll be fine for your purpose. neve rheard the NAD

I'm a lapsed audiophile!

Had a $20,000 system in the Uk which never made it here when we emigrated and with 3 dogs in the house, expensive loudspeakers with polished veneers and expensive cables running around the floor etc have never seemed like a good mix..!

I may get myself a wee system again once we move though. There's some nice Naim gear on Trade Me which I have always enjoyed...no....must....resist.....

I think they are fine if you like Hippity Hoppity stuff. I don't. I do think they are slowly improving and maybe the Apple purchase will see some move towards a less bass heavy slant for at least some of the models. At the moment they remind me of the headphone equivalent of one of those silly cars you hear driving around going 'doof doof doof' all the time!!

Given your stated taste in sonic signature, Beats definitely not for you as already noted. They do seem to be improving, if you look at Tyll Hertson's reviews of their more current headphones it does seem they are moving closer to a more reference sound rather than their previous U-shaped frequency response.

FWIW I like a wide variety of music, including some 'hippity hoppity' stuff, and still do not like Beats. The bass in those genres is already elevated, don't need my headphone to accentuate that. Do want my headphone to reproduce the bass that is there, so when called for the bass has to be tight and slamming and well extended and textured. The HE-6 in my desktop rig give me that, their bass quality is to die for. In the portable realm I find the bass of the NAD HP50 enormously enjoyable, even if not on a level with the HE-6.

I cringe when my friends tell me "Oh these headphones have really good bass, they are the best I have ever heard" - meaning more bass = better headphones yell

Gave them a taste of Audio Technica M50... they said they were average compared to Beats. I felt like going inside the room and crying.....

I do like Tyll's reviews - he strikes me as a guy I'd enjoy a beer with.

A friend of mine just got some Blue Mo-Fi's.

Not exactly portable in the lightweight sense (although of course they are more portable than a set of Stax electrostatics!) but v comfy and very good sound. Great design (part steam punk part F1 race car suspension!) and a very different approach.

Have negotiated a good deal on B&W P7's but still not sure if I can pull the trigger at that price...they are so nice though...
