Apple did have to post the warning that phones may have been bricked but it would have been pretty hard for them to leave any unlocking in place. The update process simply reflashed the phone with the new versions of the software they have released (as updates have always done), so overwriting any custom code on the phone.

The real killer for (software) unlockers is that Apple appear to have closed the security hole that allowed custom software to be loaded on to the phone in the first place (the 'jailbreak'). Without the security hole, software unlockers are back at square one unless they can find another buffer overflow they can exploit.

The guys purchasing the hardware mod that sits between the SIM and the phone are likely to be unaffected I would guess. They'll be happy.
