VFNZ 1.0.2 -> 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2 -> 1.1.3

Am now back at 1.1.2.

I was holding off going to 1.1.3 as the jailbreak that's been released is only a soft-upgrade (doesn't upgrade baseband) but then I couldn't help myself and took the plunge :)

It is, without a doubt, the easiet upgrade so far. Simply install and run an application from installer, 20 mins later your phone reboots and there you have it (except for one other minor step for getting CallerID working properly).

But I have since returned to 1.1.2 after accidentally killing my Installer app installation (my own fault :P) and it looked like the only way to fix that was to go back to 1.1.1 and upgrade from there.

I then decided to stay at 1.1.2 as I'm going to wait for a proper upgrade (which is pretty much sorted according to this: http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25185). The upgrade is done through iTunes which upgrades the baseband at which point you downgrade to 1.1.1 and then follow the normal soft-upgrade process. End result is you end up with new firmware AND baseband. Although, this option only works for phones that have the 3.9 bootloader AND were unlocked with IPSF (although, I think AnySIM is untested so may work).

nzbullet: you didn't have to go down through each version to fix your accidental file deletion. All that was needed was:
- Restore to 1.1.1 in iTunes (either enter DFU mode or hold Option key while clicking "Restore" and select local 1.1.1.ipsw file)
- Jailbreak w/ jailbreakme.com
- Run Oktoprep
- Upgrade to 1.1.2 in iTunes (hold Option key while clicking "Upgrade" and select local 1.1.2.ipsw file)
- Jailbreak 1.1.2 with Dev Team (jailbreak.jar)
- Upgrade to 1.1.3 with Dev Team soft-upgrade

Can't believe you spent 11 hours!! :P Although I know I've done similar in the past with 1.1.1!! :)

It did the steps you suggested, but for some reason it just wouldn't keep the unlock when I got back to 1.1.2, I tried a lot of things and I am sure that by me going to 1.0.2 made absolutely NO difference, but after that it worked. Trust me going to 1.0.2 was a last ditch effort, I know I must have been doing something wrong but at the time I was too tired to worry!

It will be good to see if this "real" upgrade gets done properly. i.e not having to run a script everytime you reboot or swap sims (Not that I do that much). The thing for me is Google Locate works. If I reboot I have to run LocateMe App once and I am up and running. This is, at the moment, the only issue with having an old baseband. Personally I would prefer to run LocateMe App once to get Google Locate to work after a reboot, over having to run a script in terminal to acheive the same thing.

The points you raise regarding the "true upgrade" were the same concerns I had. I knew there was no way in hell I wanted to be typing out those commands after each reboot. However, I knew it wouldn't be long before someone wrote an app to do it (which they have "Signal.app") and then for someone else to get that app to run automatically everytime the phone is started (which they have as well by adding a plist file to the LaunchDaemons directory).

So once that is done the process becomes completely invisible. I imagine that when a solution is put together by the Dev Team or whoever, they will add that to the jailbreak process. And I also think that what ever jalbreak was applied for the soft-upgrade will be applied directly rather than via a soft-upgrade.

As far as whether or not there is any real benefit from having the correct baseband for the firmaware, absolutely there is. I imagine that half of the teething problems with the 1.1.3 jailbreak is because of this very reason. I know I'm exaggerating with this analogy but it would be like upgrading your 1990 Toyota to a year 2000 model but keeping the old motor... being that the motor it the core element of the car much the same as the baseband handles all the comms elements (GSM, WiFi and bluetooth) so is the core of you phone isn't it? Ok - very bad analogy but you get what I mean :)

I was on 1.1.1; thought I'd take the plunge. Oops.

Upgraded to 1.1.2, anysim couldn't unlock me so retreated to 1.1.1, including baseband downgrade. Jailbreak, activate, fine - back at 1.1.1.

"Try again," I thought. Upgraded to 1.1.2, jailbreak ok but the unlock must have gone badly because now my baseband is hosed. I have the "needs repair" message, no IMEI, no bluetooth, no wireless etc. Crap.

Independence can't connect and I'm getting segmentation faults with iPhuc - currently installing a 10.4.10 and iTunes 1.4.2 on a separate partition to see if I can get iPhuc to work.

People report having luck with iBricker in this situation, but I'm on OS X. Not quite at the stage of installing Boot Camp just for this!

What a mess. Any ideas?

And yes I get your analogy (not that bad by the way). But what if I have a Ford?

When I say "no issues" with the current baseband, I mean it doesn't really affect anything else, atleast no to a degree that worries me. I should have said that until the Dev Team come out with an Official way to do it where there is no messing around having to try and run scripts I will stay where I am (Soft 1.1.3 Upgrade). It is only gonna be a matter of time and once they have done it I will be at the front of the line.

Lyall - You may have to go to windows. Yuk, however I find it helped me having both OS's running as I could switch between the two if one wouldn't work then generally the other would.

Cyril - not even worth doing a separate reply for that comment - in fact why am I typing this...

lyall: I was on 1.1.1; thought I'd take the plunge. Oops.

It's been quite a journey, but I'm now on 1.1.3. The constant reboot phase was scary. Probably me own fault - trying to get iPhuc working probably did me more harm than good.

Turns out iBrickr runs find under VMWare (and presumably Parallels too). Helps if you install iTunes first though :-) 7.4.2 has been my friend.

Now, if only Installer.app wasn't broken I could try out this Locate Me business!

UPDATE: hee hee...ordered a NextSIM then 2 days later Geohot comes out with a software onlock..<shrug>

OTB 1.1.1 (i think) -> VFNZ 1.0.2 (used for 4-5 months) then -> 1.1.1 -> 1.1.3 brick -> 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2 -> 1.1.3 fully functional

Love iPhone so much - best thing I've ever bought!! Use all the features on a regular basis, I hope that Orcon releases a decent iPhone data plan
