CYaBro: As an AASP I can confirm that we don't have the option of replacing screens on iPhones in New Zealand.
The only option is a whole unit replacement.

We have had a few people come in that have also been told it would be about $180 to replace the screen but when we called Apple support to ask about this they have said "we thought the customer was calling from Australia."

Mail in repair could be a different story however.

If your iPhone has a single hairline crack, with no other damage to the housing or point of impact on the glass, then Apple may cover the whole unit replacement under warranty, or under NZ consumer law.

That is what my phone has, single hairline crack , no damage to phone. Not even sure how it happened actually, i just went to use it one day and it had this crack. I must have bumped something while it was in my pocket I guess. Still , screens don't just crack without impact so assumed it would be on me.

If what you say is true then definitely talk to Apple or take it an AASP and they will inspect it and advise whether it will be covered or not.
Sounds like it should be though.

It is a $50-$100 inspection fee (something like that from memory), so would prefer not to incur the extra cost and they might just say no anyway.

One thing is for sure with this mail in repair business. You better not be expecting your phone back quick smart. The problem isn't with Apple but its appointment logistics agent.

I dropped off my phone at a New Zealand Couriers depot after collecting the return box there that the local NZC courier refused to deliver - claiming no one was home - when we were both home. This was early afternoon Thursday and for over 36 hours there was NO tracking information on TNT's website and I only just saw that my phone has just left the NZC depot on Saturday morning.

EVERY Apple delivery/mail in replacement that we have experienced has had some unsatisfactory aspect to it, in most cases multiple days of unexplained delays and in one case a lost item where during the process of working out what went on I was repeatedly lied to. TNT and its agent NZC are both utterly hopeless IMO.

My phone has been repaired and its return is pending. Now if only TNT can break its 100% record of uselessness and actually get the phone back to me within a week.

Always been very impressed with TNT - usually overnight from Sydney for me, to a business address anyway. Gets difficult if you're getting it sent to home and not there though.
Unfortunately just gone through this too and about to mail away for a $544 repair.

What is disappointing is the ServicePlus and Yoobee pricing who both quoted more than Apple, I feel sorry for anyone taking their device here thinking it is probably cheaper than sending to Apple to fix..

Honestly, ring Apple again. Is it just your screen that's broken? If so, the price quoted seriously isn't right. I was firm quoted a $170-something NZD price for a cracked screen fix and later had the fee waived as a goodwill gesture.

Amazingly I have received a Saturday delivery of my fixed phone and Apple did a great job. It now looks for all intents and purposes like a new phone.
