This might sound dumb, as I don't know a lot about modern apple devices, but if you plug it into iTunes would the device name come up? As I know when I was borrowing a iPhone 4S a few weeks ago when I plugged it into the computer iTunes displayed the name, and I think it was set from the setup thing. I think if that would work you need to turn autosync off or it'll rename it to "Your PC's Username's iPhone/iPad". Just trying to help find the owner.

Nice thought but unfortunately it won't get any info from the device until it is unlocked with the passcode and then select the option to Trust the Computer.

Is it a cellular model? Im not sure if the model number is on the back, but check if there is a sim slot on the side. If so, they are bound to receive messages from text, iMessage, FB Messenger which would be a clue possibly. Or you could take the sim out and ask the relevant telco to advise the customer your contact details.
