Piskel what's your take on downgrading the bl? From what I read on Geohot's blog people with bl 3.9 may be left out of the custom bl that he may be working on. And looking at the Youtube videos released by Dev Team they are also seem to be working on a custom bl, hence the old apple logo at the boot time.

Yes - it's all quite complicated really isn't it Smile I feel very sorry for anyone that hasn't done their homework (or wouldn't know what this all meant anyway).

This is the way I see it:

Anyone with a 4.6BL phone should NOT (as you said yourself) be using ziPhone 2.5 to unlock their iPhone. For some stupid reason, zibri has taken it upon himself to downgade everyone's bootloader to 3.9 when he could just leave it at 4.6 and just downgrade the baseband to 4.02.13_G (this is the only baseband version that can be sim unlocked under the 4.6BL).

"At this stage" there is no way to reverse the downgrade. The reason for this is that the 3.9 bootloader does not contain the same exploit that 4.6 does which allows loading a custom BL.

I do say "at this stage" though, as it's been proven in the past that nothing is definite in the world of iPhone hacking. Didn't GeoHOT himself once say that the 4.6BL SW unlock is not possible? Smile

Where does this leave those of us on 3.9... well, the Dev Team have not stated anywhere that this is for 4.6BL only. And if you look at the second video it shows a 4GB capacity on the iPhone which means it's highly unlikely that is a 4.6BL phone (4.6BL are only 8GB or 16GB)... unless it's a refurbished one.

What does scare me with all this however is that I imagine we will see a rise in "truly" bricked phones. iTunes hasn't upgraded the BL during any of it's firmware releases so far... this is because if anything goes wrong during the process it would leave the phone with no way to boot-up. Although I guess ziPhone has had the option to downgrade the BL for a little while now...

Hi Piksel

Can I clarrify a few things here before I go and completely stuff up my new iPhone? I have NOT unlocked, activated or jailbreaked it yet and want to get the process straight in my head.

The phone is relatively new and has the 1.1.4 out of the box firmware.

To keep the 4.6Bootloader(BL) using ziphone 2.5 I should:
-   Jailbreak and activate only.

I then use ziphone 2.3 to UNLOCK the phone as this will ensure that the 4.6BL is not changed?

I know that ziphone 2.5 has the functionality Unlock, Jailbreak and activate only. Reading the postings above this seems not be a recomended option if I dont want to change the bootloader

What is Baseband and what should I keep this to? I am planning to use the phone on Vodafone NZ. I am not even sure how to
find out what the Baseband is at the moment??

All of this stuff is very confusing and as you mention if you dont do your homework then expect your phone to stuff up completely.

Hey Mailmarshall,

[EDIT] Forgot to say - if you have an OTB 1.1.4 then you will have baseband version 4.04.13_G. The baseband is where all your comms stuff happens e.g. calls, sms, wi-fi, bluetooth [/EDIT]

You are correct in your assumptions. But there are now 3 options to choose from (well, 3 depending on what platform you're on - let's assume OS X :P)

1) The option you mention above - but to be honest, I would avoid Ziphone.

2) Use iNdependence - this will only downgrade your baseband to version 4.02.13_G - the reason the baseband must be downgraded is that this is the only baseband version that can be sim unlocked on 4.6BL phones. The minor downside is that you won't have the "Find Me" feature in Google Maps. This is the simplest option.

3) Use iPlus. iPlus will automatically downgrade your bootloader to 3.9 which means you can use the latest baseband. The CRUCIAL difference with iPlus is that it downgrades your bootloader to a modified version that CAN be upgraded at a later date. This option has more steps but is still reasonable simple. The advantage is that you will have teh correct or intended baseband / firmware combination of 4.04.13G and 1.1.4.

Here are some links to the iClarified tutorials for iPlus:
Mac: How to Unlock 1.1.4 and Downgrade to 3.9-fakeblank iPhone Bootloader
Windows: How to Unlock 1.1.4 and Downgrade to 3.9-fakeblank iPhone Bootloader

I would also recommend you "kiwi-ise" your iPhone once you're unlocked. THis will get a number of things working properly like CallerID, Ph# formatting etc etc. Just view our website for details (see my auto-sig) :)

Piksel: thanks for the clarrification and the links to the tutorials. I am sure others in the same boat as me, will find this forum very useful.

I am now going to go down the iPlus track rather than ziphone. It appears to be pretty straight forward much like zIPhone and it does everything I need it to do - Activate, Unlock, Jailbreak.

Piksel: Just one more question:
I got my iPhone yesterday and set about trying to use iPlus (windows version). Checking the instructions it said make sure that the phone has 1.1.4.

When i connected my phone to Itunes 7.6 it came up with a thing saying please activate it with At& T. Do I need to do this step before doing the iPlus hack?

The other thing was - how do I actually make sure I have the 1.1.4 firmware? The phone is relatively new (purchased last week) so I assumed its 1.1.4 OTB but I have been advised to check it.

If it was purcahsed last week then it is most likely 1.1.4. However, iPlus specifically needs 1.1.4 so it's probably easier to just perform the restore just to be sure. We have put together some instructions here that you may find useful: http://www.kiwi-ise.co.nz/upgrading-to-1-1-4/ (Step 2 explains how to put your phone into recovery mode for a restore).

Hey Piksel managed to activate, unlock and jailbreaked using iPlus2.0b. I just noticed that my firmware is now 1.1.3(4A93) an the Modem firware (Baseband I presume) is 04.04.05_G.

Firstly I am amazed that iPlus has downgraded the firmware to 1.1.3 (considering I  was sure it was 1.1.4) but what I would like to know is how can I check the bootloader version? I tried looking at SETTINGS-> GENERAL -> ABOUT  but cant see it anywhere. Really hope I can still upgrade it in the future.

The phone seems to be running well on Vodafone. Haven't put anything (music or apps) on it yet.

iPlus does not downgrade your firmware. I can only think you must have selected the wrong ipsw file when you restored?

but what I would like to know is how can I check the bootloader version?

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16285 - if it says 3.9 and you unlocked a 4.6BL phone and you've never used ziphone 2.4 or 2.5 then it will be 3.9fakeblank which is fully upgradeable. Just a reminder too, in case you haven't already seen it - there have been warnings posted about restoring to 1.0.0 or 1.1.1 if you have 3.9fakeblank... do not do it.

Thanks Piksel.

Not really sure what i would be getting more with the 1.1.4 firmware and the phone seems to working ok so I probably wont muck around with it. I will check the bootloader though.

Can I upgrade to 1.1.4 later even though i have unlocked, jail broken and activated it now? might even be better to wait for 1.1.5 if/when that comes out.

I have seen the warnings about downgrading to 1.0.0 or 1.1.1. I wont be gaining much by doing so but have to make sure that when I connect to itunes I dont upgrade/downgrade it by mistake...

As a side thing, not sure but you may already know this already- a friend has advised me also NOT to connect a hacked iPhone to a Bose Docking Station. It bricked his phone - sounded a bit odd but he did show me.

Not much to gain from 1.1.4 - it's mainly bug fixes :) You could still quite easily "restore" to 1.1.4 if you wanted.

The next firmware version is 1.2.0 (aka 2.0). You could also wait until that one comes out. Do not upgrade straight away of course :) Keep an eye on these forums our kiwi-ise and we'll let you know when it's safe to upgrade.

I hadn't heard about the Bose docking issue. I'm afraid I find it difficult to believe that a Bose Sounddock could brick an iPhone!? Could it be coincidence? When you say bricked... what state is the phone in currently?

Yes i was exactly like you i.e found it hard to believe  but I did see it start up all it says is 'iphone is disabled'. the only thing I could think of was that the Bose unit was connected via wifi to the net. My friend has bought another iPhone any way but its well worth knowing.
