IMO the iPhone 8 plus would be the way to go due to its better hardware and larger display. In fact the iPhone 8+ has a larger screen than the iPhone X (in area) so everything is bigger when viewed on the 8+ which is good for my ageing eyes. I have an iPhone X and was considering going back/down to an 8+. I ran them side by side browsing, emailing viewing YouTube etc. The 8+ is definitely bigger but the surprising thing was just how much brighter and clearer the iPhone X screen was in comparison. This made me keep the X.

Get the Plus.

My wife has a 7 Plus, I have a 7 (work supplied).

The Plus is so much better for browsing, the camera is better and the battery life is better.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I have decided on the iPhone 8 Plus. I really appreciate all the support and help!

Now I just have to decide if I buy the phone from Vodafone (our broadband/home phone/tv provider) or 2 Degrees (my mobile provider)

And of course, which colour!!!

If your buying outright it doesn't matter where you get it from, or you could just order it online from Apple. Just chuck the sim card in from your chosen provider and away you go. Apples hardware prices and pretty much fixed.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I have to say the only real difference is the camera. If you like taking photos then the dual lens on the + is better. The portrait mode on the 8+ is incredible.

I have had an 8+ for a month or so, and bought it without the sort of research geeks like us would normal do before spending that sort of money, because my 5S was needing a factory reset at least once a day, and I had to get what was available. I have to say I am loving the phone, and astonished by how good the camera is (I am a retired commercial photographer) but I have not worked out how to do close ups. Are there any tricks and tips for close ups with this camera? What is the minimum focus distance? Is it better to pull back and zoom in?

I have looked at third party lenses, but they kind of negate the whole point of using a cell phone to take pictures, as it's extra stuff to carry, and would take time to fit. Plus I am guessing you would need to remove any protective cases.

Non professional photographer here, it my 7+ seems to give the best portraits when I step back slightly and use the optical zoom (+2) to close in the gap... especially in lower light when the flash wants to be used.
I also just LOVE the instant ability to edit/crop etc the pics to save on post processing too 😉
