Remember the 8GB- $199 and 16GB- $299 in the US making it at worst $600 (50c in the dollar conversion)

If they release it at a scary $870 I will be giving it a big pass.

Yeah, its hard to say, really. But if it is that price, I will be leaving it too.

As a previous user said, could be for the iPhone outright, without strings.

However, if you "buy" it and get tied into a contract they should in theory keep the price of the "phone" cheaper than if you were to without a contract.

Its just a shame, everyone wants to know now, but Vodafone are being very coy about reviling ANYTHING. I think for everyone there are three major concerns, (IMO) The price of the phone, the price of the contract per month, and whats actually in the plan.

I'm just hoping they at least include SOME data to accommodate for the web etc.

But hey, this is Vodafone, be prepared to be disappointed.
I should really rephrase that last sentence, but I cant be stuffed. You should get what I mean :D

bonkiebonks: I believe the final (subsidised) prices are set by Apple during their negotiations with Vodafone, and as such I have a feeling the iPhone 3G is more of a burden for Vodafone (in New Zealand at least) than it is an opportunity for them to make $$$ (seeing as how Vodafone NZ has enjoyed ripping their customers off in the past).

That wouldnt surprise me.. Apple seem to have the control, or the power if you like.
I'd say it is a bit of a burden (Well, compared to other phones they sell), but they're obviously getting something good out of it because well, they're going to sell it aren't they?

BTW, I agree totally with what you said in your last sentence :P

Unsubsidised price from Vodafone Italy - 8Gb iPhone for €499 or the 16GB model for €569. That puts it just on $1k here.

Still pretty expensive, really. Even if it is cheaper, based on the average person they don't really have that much money just lying around ATM.
Like I've been called a mad-man for buying a phone costing 1500NZD.

I don't really see how anyone thinks Voda will actually release this for ~$1000, they'll get ripped into by media not only here but worldwide, given the precedent Jobs has set with his announcement at WWDC.

What I think will happen, however, is that they'll ream us with plan charges. For a combo plan along the lines of Talker/TXTer + 1gb of 3G data (pretty reasonable IMO), expect to pay ~$100/month, which will more than make up for the subsidised purchase price across the length of a 24-month contract.

Just look at AT&T's 3G iPhone plans, even their basic one is US$69.99 which I imagine is around NZ$100.

The question I'm interested in, having just signed up for Talker myself, is whether Vodafone will make an exception to their early termination fee rule for iPhone buyers, considering their substantially higher ARPU. I know overseas carriers are allowing free re-signs, here's hoping Vodafone follow suit...

Mmm. True.. Scary thought, but definitely a possibility..

I do hope it isn't. And if it is, I just hope they have a better plan organised than the ones they currently have, Because they absolutely suck to be quite honest..
Because seriously, for the cost of the plans they have now, and what you actually get out of it leaves a lot to be desired.

Only time will tell. But I'd say they'd make it fairly reasonable, otherwise no-one would buy then.. (Well atleast not use the plan, right?)

EDIT: Oh BTW, I have the same question, actually. As im signed on a fixed term with them.. (The Mega one).

If it's sold for a reasonable price and I can use my current plan setup (Mega + 1GB) I'll look at getting one..

If there is a new "iPhone" plan forced on with it I won't touch it.
Same goes for Telecom's new GSM network, if I cannot bring over my current Flexi mytime plan, I wil stay CDMA just as I kept my 025 and the 6PM off-peak going until near to the 025 network's death.

A lot of posters are forgetting (or don't know) that the $199 Jobs announcement is full of spin (as anything from Apple at the conference would be expected to be).

It's for a tie-down to a 2 year contract.

So for Voda to release a $1000 unlocked iPhone doesn't go against what was announced. Not if it's released quietly alongside a $299 iPhone with a 2 year contract.

If Voda/Apple doesn't think that the NZ media can understand this, then they just won't release a pre-paid unlocked phone.

Little hint to back this up:

At 1:40:10 (iTunes podcast), Jobs says: "July 11... and in almost every one of these countries, the price is a maximum of $199... all around the world"

It wouldn't be that surprising for an expensive iPhone and/or data plan here... but that's exactly what I dislike.

Regardless, even if it is $199 USD in NZ, that will translate to between $300 and $400 (using "retail exchange rates").

The thing is, Vodafone don't have to screw us over in price. They can happily offer a $299 phone (I think that's a reasonable translation of $199 USD considering the volatility of our dollar) but just rape us in data or rental costs. It's conceivable.

Im with you 100%. Well, unless the plan is worth it, of course. (in other words, WORTH THE MONEY).
Im on Vodafone's mega plan, and i find that thats bearly enough to cover me for a month. Probably half a month, MAX. Period.

Understood, and knowing our luck, we're going to be one of them hit with the big prices. Both with plan and the phone.

Na, you're right. So maybe they will stick to Apples plan of a cheaper iPhone IN THEORY. BUt really, its gonna cost you the same (probably more) in the long run. Then is it worth it? Definitely not.. But I guess everybody to their own.. You could be thinking the complete opposite.

BTW, I must go back and check those damned keynotes. Thats a very good find, I TOTALLY missed that.

Although VFNZ looks to be not offering pre-paid.. it might give an indication to handset pricing.
