dauckland:
Hmm.

I managed to load the updated bundle.
Steps:
After editing the bundle I copied it over to one of my linuxes into the apache root
Creating the folder structure content.info.apple.com/iPhone/CarrierBundles/061-4903.20080710.3eTr5
I moved the bundle file into that folder

On my mac I edited the host file:

## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost 10.0.1.xxx appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Then I restored the iPhone.
It did ask to download an updated bundle, which after all the redirection settings would be server up by me.
After restore the bundle (the custom one) did appear in the library folder, so I presume it's loaded onto the phone (APN set to www.vodafone.net.nz).
But. It still doesn't work. I think the iphone specific APN is just a way of Vodafone knowing it's an iphone.
I think they detect the phone's IMEI.
I will keep trying.

Maybe try this?

You can try adding in

<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
<true/>

to see if your iphone is actually getting the new file (see if you can edit it after you upload and reboot iphone)

I have managed to get Data working with Prepay without editing the Carrier Bundle. Not sure if I am allowed to put it here so head over to the kiwi-ise.co.nz forum for the full how to.

Mauricio, if I am allowed to post it here I will do as well.

Nice... someone should have thought of that.

It's ingenious!

Have you tried it after a reboot (as in power off then on) to see if the settings reset somehow?

No I didn't try it after reboot, however I would guess that it will revert back to the normal APN.

I need to get more credit so I can continue to test it, just gone through about 20 bucks in 5 minutes and my CC won't work on the Voda website for top ups. Once I get more credit I will continue testing and post a video to Youtube.

Even though I am not going to be getting the iPhone 3G, you are my hero.

Do you want diggs?

Also - why did it cost you so much money?? Could you have stayed within the walled garden?

He connected to www.vodafone.net.nz which is the internet APN

Only the WAP APN browsing Vlive is free and the iphone does not have a WAP browser!

Go ahead. You might want to post it in a new topic here though.

Hmmm, forgive my ignorance.

I have a 3-4 year old Nokia phone that I push "Web" and it sends me to the VF Live homepage.

Will that be a WAP phone?

What other types of browsing are there other than WAP? (newbie alert)

OK, so I have topped up and I can now confirm so more information on this. Specifically two things.

1. When you hard reboot the iPhone it does NOT lose this setting, it only loses it when you remove the sim.

2. The price. OUCH!! It cost me 50 cents to view the main page of the App Store (hence the $20.00 in 5 minutes). I kid you not, I am not exagerating, this is what it cost. If you do it be prepared for no credit left!

Ahmad - your phone will be using WAP, the iPhone has a full internet browser, not WAP and therefore costs more, and there are no "free" areas. If you want to Digg it you are more than welcome.

Please note I have started a new thread for this here

Any chance of you getting a digg button on that page?

Do many phone have a "full internet browser", and are these the only 2 possibilities for a phone (WAP or full browser)?

Is there any way I can calculate home much it would cost to browse a particular site (using my home broadband) so that I can stay under 10Mb when prepaid data comes into effect?

nicely done. My question is, does it slowly use data by itself like the iphone 1g did?

As a Firefox extension, Web Developer has a Document Size feature which calculates the size of not just the document, but the objects within and scripts.

This should give you a rough idea.
