I just updated mine and it asked me to update the carrier settings.
I clicked "Cancel"

Are any of the problem related to custom APN settings?
I have those to be able to have data on a casual plan, so dind't want to update the settings.

Its ok to update this..it does nothing bad. just updates to the NZ prefs for the Iphone.

I tried to update the carrier settings as suggested, but got a fault saying it could complete it.

Anyone actually have that work?

Wht carrier settings need updating?

I'm wondering, are the people with this carrier problem using pre pay? This theory seems very far off but it may well be the cause.

Incorrect speling should be punnished!!!

It seems as if the carrier update iTunes is trying to access cant be found on apples servers which is why we're getting the errors.. not sure why its trying to find an update at all to be honest as not a lot of settings in the payload would need to be changed.

For those interested: the carrier settings payload contains the settings for APN's, Voicemail Number, Visual Voicemail, Accepted Simcards for Carrier and the images displayed next to reception bars (in our case, Voda NZ png files).

drdanick: Ok i've got the update installed. It seems that the 'faster backup' thing isn't caused by the update, as was reported by some people. I actually found that I had to run two backups before the phone would update it's firmware. After the first one taking over 1:30 i was a bit annoyed.
However, I was pleased to see the second backup go in under 10 minutes.

This gives me reason to believe that the only slow backup is the first one that you allow to happen.

The slow backups people are complaining about is that EVERY time you do a backup, which is turned on before a sync by default, it performs a full (i.e. slow) backup.

The update seems to fix this, so only the first backup of the device (perhaps after the upgrade) is slow, and the rest are differential backups.

Contacts App is *a lot* faster to use now, also apps don't seem to be crashing that have been downloaded via iPhone then synced to iTunes.

Same problem with Carrier Update. It seems to be happening in other countries too, not just NZ and Aussie. There have been "fixes" posted elsewhere but I have not managed to get any to work.

Here are some fixes to try just in case they do work you:

1. Make sure there is no fluff, hairs, dirt etc in the dock connector

2. Try hard switching off device and switching back on, then plugging in

3. Completly shut down *all* instances of iTunes (including itunesHelper) and try again

4. Completely uninstall iTunes, deletig all associated files and folders (obviously moving/backing up your music) and then reinstall and try again.

NOTE: These have worked for some and not others. None of the above have worked for me though.

I thought i'd test the "hangup accessing app store while an app is updating/installing" issue I always seem to get.

First time, while an app was installing I was able to re-enter the app store and it actually responded and was happy.

The second time, while installing a different app, the app store was an unresponsive as I am used to. Basically the updating logo never goes away, and I hit the home button (not hold) and after about 10 seconds, it decides to return me to the home screen. *sigh*

But overall, phone does seem speedier, so not too bad.

Same problem with Carrier Update. It seems to be happening in other countries too, not just NZ and Aussie.

This happens to all Vodafone iPhone 3G. That's believed to do with (legit) unlocked phone.

I have a 1st gen phone with 2.0. Some of the overseas blogs suggest that the 2.0.1 upgrade will go straight on without re-locking.
It would not be jail broken but at the moment thats ok.

Has anyone here actually tried it? Any success?

I got my 3g iphone back from repairs and they've updated it!!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf i baught it to use on telecom in novemeber has this update put a baseband meaning i cant use it on telecoms new network??

I'm a a iPhone 3G with v2.01 and I can pick up all three networks (vodafone NZ, Telecom NZ and NZComms) I'm in Parnell, Auckland CBD.

Well... your iPhone always had a baseband, otherwise it wouldn't do anything wireless, would it. AFAIK, there's no definite evidence that upgrading to 2.0.1 will eliminate your chance for an unlock, however it potentially might. You can downgrade to 2.0.0 by putting your phone in recovery mode then option clicking "restore" to select your 2.0 firmware.

BTW, did anyone get reception improvement in 0.1? My reception turned to c^@p from 1.1.4 to 2.0 (allegedly transmitter power was turned down to extend battery life), I was hoping 2.0.1 would've fixed it but, I see no signs so far. Anyone got an improvement?,
