There may be a way around this but it depends on if you changed the Apple ID from the ihug email address to the gmail one or the gmail is a completely new Apple ID. If it is the former you might be able to log in to icloud.com/find and see if you can see the phone there. If you can then there is a way to fix the issue but I am not entirely certain that I can remember it off the top of my head.

antoniosk:

you need to open a case with Apple and hope they will help you. There’s no other way from here unless she can remember the password. If you have the mobile number from that time you might be able to get a recovery code texted to you.

good luck.

From past cases like this I believe you also have to prove legitimate ownership to Apple - a purchase receipt.

ok thanks - we changed the apple id from ihug to gmail, so the ihug apple id no longer exists

she has had the same mobile number for years now but when we changed the apple id it must have automatically changed on her iPhone 6s? - she cannot remember what happened, but she doesn't have a problem with the old apple id coming up on her phone.

I'll have to contact Apple it seems and see if they can help

thanks for the replies

That actually makes life much easier because there is a workaround to get the ID changed to the right one. Calling AppleCare might be your best bet.

The workaround has to do with going to Passwords and Accounts and adding the correct Apple ID as an iCloud account. You then need to remove the account (and this is where I get a little fuzzy on the steps) and you should then be able to sign into iCloud itself with the proper ID. This is because it gets confused because both addresses are for the same account and removes them both.

If you call AppleCare and get someone who doesn't have a clue what to do, ask to speak to a senior advisor. If anyone starts following the steps in https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT203828 tell them it doesn't work and to look for a solution in one of their other resources.

thanks for that - I'll try apple support again later tonight

I tried earlier to log on to apple support but it sent a verification code to wifes phone and she had no idea what it was for so ignored it!

but I'll grab her phone tonight and try apple support online

ok the good news is I was playing around with the settings last night and I'm not sure what I did but the apple ID has been changed along our e-mail address

when I go into settings it still has my wifes name and initials, but when I press her name where it says Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store - it brings up my name / e-mail address and photo - so that's fine

the only other problem is all the apps don't work - all the apps are there on the screen but where it has the name of the app underneath each app it has a cloud shaped thing and when I click on any app it says 'unable to install XXXXX (app name) This app could not be installed'

does anyone know why this is? - do I need to do another update from iTunes or something??, or do I need to delete them and reinstall each one?

any advice would be appreciated  :-)

It's likely that they are discontinued/old apps that have not been updated for the version of iOS that your iPhone is running - the 4S would have had the ability to run those because it stopped getting full iOS updates ages ago.

I have had this with updates to iOS, where I have lost the ability to use older apps - they are basically no longer supported by the app developer and unable to operate on the iOS version that you have.

More likely they were originally installed with the original Apple ID.

If you click on the app, does it ask you anything or advise that the app is incompatible? I have one that I used to use and when I click on it, ig gives me the following message:

"Live Football" Needs to be Updated

This app needs to be updated by the developer to work on this version of iOS.

KEEP/DELETE

If you get this message, the only way to use the app is to install it from a backup to an old device (your iPhone 4S)

Don't delete the existing app, just reinstall it from the App Store. It should then retain the existing app data.

ok so I've gone into the app store and there are no 'updates'

so I went search and did 'fitbit', and it came up but didn't give me an option to 'get' it or 'update' it.

the word GET is on other apps (that I don't have or want) but on fitbit and other apps I have when I search for them it's just a faint round circle with a small blue square in the middle

does anyone have any ideas what to do?

Also I've just noticed something weird - my messages icon was on the main screen, but it is now in a folder called 'Productivity' with the photos icon.... I didn't set it up like this or anything....... is there any way I can get it out so it is an icon by itself on the screen and not in another folder with something else??

thanks in advance

Have a read of this Apple Support doc: Move and organize apps on iPhone

The faint round circle with a small blue square in the middle is the App store trying to download updates.

  1. Double tap the Home Button and swipe up ALL the Apps one at a time to clear them all.
  2. Now carry out a Force restart iPhone 7 by.
  3. Press and hold both the volume down button and the Sleep/Wake button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  5. Now attempt to update the Apps again one at time.

thanks for that - I managed to move some apps and delete a couple I no longer want, but all the other apps are still in 'updating' mode

Can you not sign out and sign in with the Apple ID that your wife uses to install the apps and then sign in with your new Apple ID.
