I have done some testing - trying to share links to my brother. I have updated to iPadOS 13.5 but the issue is still there. I tried to share a link to this thread with him and it comes up with the Portuguese number.

If I copy the URL and paste it into Messages, it goes correctly. So I guess this points towards the share sheet.

if I try sharing the link to him from my iPhone, it works correctly - so it’s possibly an iPadOS issue but maybe not iOS issue.

I also tried sharing the ‘problem’ links to my wife’s iPad and it worked fine.

I will completely delete my brother’s contact details from my devices, re-enter them and test again.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll phone Apple support and see what they say.

I deleted my brother as a Contact, rebooted my iPad and re-created him as a new contact. The contact details are simply a 2 Degrees phone number and an xtra email address.

Then I tapped Share to send him a link via Messages to this GZ web page. His name didn’t appear in the row of frequent recipients (because he is now a ‘new’ contact) so I typed his name - and Messages came up with the +351-xxxxx Portuguese number.

Something is very wrong. Think I’d better call Apple.

Called Apple Support and spent 30+ mins talking to the rep in Oz. He said he had never seen or heard of such an issue before.

He set himself up with screen-share on my iPad and watched and verified what I was saying. Fortunately I could easily replicate it. We tried things that didn’t fix it and ended up deleting all of my contacts from the iPad then reinstalling them from iCloud. This seems to have done the trick. Maybe I could have thought of that but didn’t. He admitted that although it appears fixed, he didn’t know what had caused it. Seems something was corrupted somehow in Contacts

Once again, very impressed with Apple’s support. The guy really was great. Apple gear isn’t cheap but this is what you get with it.

I’m glad you’ve fixed it, albeit with a blunt instrument!

I have seen corrupted Contact details before - personally I don’t think iCloud synchronisation is iron-clad or 100% robust and corruptions happen. So I reckon an iCloud sync’ing issue is the root cause here. Pretty interesting.
