I upgraded using the above guide, it was simple-as

I download the latest quickpwn 2.2.5-2 and the two bin (3.9 & 4.6)?files.
Then i ran itunes and did a restore+upgrade
Then i ran quickpwn which did the jailbreak, unlock and cydia install all in one step.
After that the phone works perfectly, it only took about 20 mins to do.

I didn't know i had to do ctrl+click or whatever in itunes, however it still worked perfectly, so maybe that step is not necessary.? I didn't have to manually download any firmware either.

That's the 'jailbreak after upgrading' procedure. The other that gehanna describes is the 'jailbreak before upgrading' one.

Basically that process is where you get itunes to download the firmware, then you use PwnageTool to jailbreak the firmware image before it's even installed onto the device. When that's done you use iTunes to install the saved firmware from PwnageTool. if you use 'ctrl-click' when you select the 'restore' or 'upgrade' options in iTunes, it'll pop up a file selection dialog where you can choose what firmware image to install.

nice- quickpwn for the win then eh!

i like my method cos it means I can keep a copy of my cracked firmware handy in case my phone bugs out, and its just a quick restore to get it back to normal

Ahh thanks for explaining that.

So what does jailbraking the phone actually do? I understand unlocking, but i havn't read anything specifically about what jailbreaking means and what it does to the phone.

Jailbreaking allows you to install and run any apps on the phone, not just ones approved/signed by apple.

A lot of people use the term "Jailbreak" to refer to both Jailbreaking and Unlocking. They're both very separate things, but they generally happen at the same time, through similar means.

I notice i have the program called Cydia. Is this an application installer/browser to choose and install applications that arn't officially supported by Apple?

Can we expect PXT to work on the iphone soon, or should i pay $8 for swirly MMS?

Yip thats the one, just dont go nuts installing apps or you may end up with a slow/buggy phone! I found that picking and choosing carefully is fine though :)

PXT will be supported in iphone 3.0 but only on 3G phones, do you have one of them or is it a 2G one? if so then youll have to get swirly to use MMS

It's a 2G phone. ok I guess i'll pay for swirly MMS then. I can't imagine i'd need to install any other applications tho.

One thing i would like though is if coverflow had an option to see only complete albums. I have 70% complete albums and 30% single tracks (usually just my fav track sync'd to the phone instead of the whole album). It would make sense to me if coverflow only flicked through complete albums.

Some people may be interested in a program called musicbridge. it is freeware. it allows you to sync wmp and itunes. i used it to copy my existing ratings data from wmp into itunes. It has lots of options you can sync the entire library in either direction or just sync specific id tags or the ratings etc.

Is there an option to turn GPRS/EDGE on/off.

At home we have wifi, so no worries about data charges. My girlfriend has been turning wifi off when she goes to work so she can save battery power. It would be good if there was an option to turn GPRS off/on to avoid accidental excessive data charges. Or it would be good if there was a dialog box that came up prior to using GPRS. I don't want to accidentally load up youtube on the iphone using gprs and end up with a massive data bill.

Grab yourself an app called SBSettings from Cydia. IF you know what BossPrefs is, SBSettings is the modern version of that. Once installed you swipe left-right along your top status bar (Where the carrier, time, logos appear) and it brings up a settings application that lets you turn things on and off. You can get extensions for it as well - just search in Cydia for SBSettings and you should get a bunch of hits. I use mine with the following:

Autolock - lets you turn the autolock feature on/off.
Bluetooth - turn BT on and off
Brightness - adjust brightness with a swipe
EDGE - turn GPRS on/off
Processes - see running processes and kill them
Rotation - turn rotation on/off for apps that support it
SSH - turn ssh on/off
Vibrate - turn vibrate on/off
WiFi - turn wifi on/off
iPod - bring up an ipod widget to control the ipod.

Sure some of these things are available deep within the System Preferences app, but this gives you quick swipe action to everything. What you're specifically asking for is the EDGE setting - to turn GPRS data on and off.

Also check out Winterboard and look for Winterboard Themes in Cydia. Winterboard is an app that lets you modify the look and feel of the iphone. There are heaps of themes to download, but also other extensions like having 5 icons in the dock instead of 4, or 5 columns per page instead of 4, plus ringtone/sound schemes etc.

I installed SB Settings and initially it didn't work. Then realised you have to power off the phone completely then restart for it to work properly.

However i still not sure if it works properly.
I can access bluetooth/wifi toggle and brightness slider, but the more button doesn't work.

When i hit "more" it just closes sbsettings.
When i hit "refresh" nothing seems to happen.
When i click "dock" nothing happens
When i click "respring" it closes sbsettings.
When i hit "power" i get the menu with power/reboot/lock/safe mode etc...

EDIT: required a reboot, now working.

Ah cool. Be aware you can get themes for SBSettings, I use the Apple Mik theme as it makes the buttons a bit smaller and lets me see more options on the page at one time. Also you need to download extensions separately and install them from Cydia to have them show up in SBSettings. So for the ones I listed you need to search for the following in Cydia:

Autolock SBSettings
iPod Widget
Processes
Rotation Inhibitor
Vibrate Toggle SBSettings

More and more show up in Cydia as the weeks go by so always go into Cydia and check the Changes tab at the bottom to see what new packages have been added since you last checked. It also shows updates for installed packages in there too
