You ordered an Apple U.S. handset? It will be locked to AT&T then...

It can be jailbroken but must be booted with Blackra1n if you power it down. You won't need to power down often and will probably be around a computer with Blackra1n to boot the device if you had to. Blacksn0w will work as an unlock. It will only be a 'tethered' jailbreak until the Dev-Team/Geohot find a better/new exploit.

I guess that makes the decision easier. Its an Android phone for me - probably eithe a milestone or Xpedia 10.

I guess it s nicer when the retailers help to make the decision.

There's an easier way: buy an iPhone from Apple NZ, unlocked, ready to use...

Yes but that wouldn't be helping with OPs problem.

I got mine from VFNZ for the fact I get the warranty, factory unlocked etc. It is the most wise choice but again, not what OP wanted.

No I shopped at store.apple.com/nz

The unit I have bought (still waiting for it to be shipped) is not a locked USA model..

Ok, so you didn't buy from Apple.com as you wrote before - that got me confused. Although the URL is store.apple.com/nz it should really be "Apple NZ store".

Balance has returned to the galaxy it seems...

Yes I'm amazed I posted to this thread one day, went away for 24 hours and came back to a discussion on jailbreaking and the merits of buying from Vodafone or Apple NZ Store :-)

Apologies folks if I lead you down the wrong path!

The next steps will be to arrange a pre-paid voice plan with XT and a good data plan - the latter is far more important to me than the former.

Good thing is that wasn't what OP was asking.

Sorry if this is a little OT, while we're talking about unlocking I thought I'd ask a quick question.

I've been googling a bit but can't seem to answer my question.  I have a 3G iphone bought from telstra in AUS.  All of the things I've found tell me to update the baseband.  Is there anyway to do this before I've unbricked the phone?

And now a bit more on topic,

Which size iPhone did you go for Paul?

Buy from the Apple NZ online store - cheaper than Vodafone and you don't have to have a Vodafone account.
