1eStar: My 3gs has better reception upsidedown, ie holding the earpiece end. If I'm in marginal reception I use my 'Mercury' browser in the inverted position so I don't keep losing service.

My opinion is that Apple is holding the phone wrong and have designed accordingly.

Yes, seems like they have designed a mobile phone "Designed for Right Handers"

Perhaps I will look at an alternative instead...

Hmm, I'm a right hander but have always held all phones with my left hand up to my left ear. This is out of convenience so I can leave my right hand free for writing when needed.

If all users could hold the phone correctly then there is nothing to worry about.
Noted on Engadget last year that there was a similar problem with the 3GS. Again - not a design flaw but a user problem.

Does this mean that the AT&T network is not as bad as claimed? That its not the network to blame but.... ...... the phone.

I agree. But the people that are saying that the phone is being used incorrectly....... are Apple employees.
So the manufacturer reckons that its not a phone problem.

All the Apple fanboys will tell you there is nothing wrong with the phone. They're "anchoring" to justify the dollars they've spent on the device.

There is no doubt that its a design flaw and as such at least the iPhone 4 users are getting ripped off. I'd go as far to say its probably a design flae from day 1 so thats 50 million suckers with a dud phone blaming their network provider for poor reception.

For example - is it "evil" Vodafones fault that calls drop or there are reception issues or the Jesus phone created by his lordship Steve Jobs? Aint one Apple owner thats going to blame Apple.

Some people have noted that the 3GS had similar issues - but wrote it off as a network provider issue.
Its best not to speak out against the mighty Apple. You might have the Feds knock on your door. Or be forced to make a piublic retraction on national television. Or be restricted from buying their products.

Some people have noted that the 3GS had similar issues -

The 3Gs issue is slightly different. The antenna is internal and at the bottom - so if you cup it in your hand you sheild the antenna.

With the external iphone 4 antenna, when you cup it, you actually short the antenna.

That's a mighty big statement.

I, for one, am a relatively happy iPhone owner, but far from being a fanboy, I am more than prepared to point out flaws and limitations that my previous phones (many that are "technically inferior") have been able to do for years flawlessly.

Dont go lumping all Apple-tech owners into one big bucket. Just because you clearly have an issue with the product or company (refer Jesus phone reference) doesn't mean that all owners of i-products are either blind, one-eyed or idiotic fanboys.

part of the problem was their 'real world testing' (and you cant get much more real world than leaving a phone behind in a pub) involved the use of a rubber case to hide the design.

The don't put the gap at the top to lessen the radiation entering the brain tissue.

It is a trend for antennas to be at the bottom of the phone. I guess, they somehow think radiation entering the jaw is safer than entering the brain. Maybe for some people ha ha.
