Funny enough I had a VFNZ rep tell me TCNZ was dropping plans to stock micro-sims. Its these guy starting all the wild rumours!

Well presumedly he meant that if you buy an iPhone from Apple and use it on XT that you will get "better reception" because of the way in which the iPhone was setup to run better on 850Mhz. That actually doesn't hold true for iPhone 4, but it definitely did previously...

It was the Telecom store in Sylvia Park, that specifically said that Vodafone change the iPhone so it suits better on their frequency. I made sure they knew I was talking about the unlocked/unopened boxes, but they said they change them all. I was sure it was complete bull...

Nothing true in that. Until now the iPhone was 850/2100 MHz WCDMA. The new model is coming 850/900/2100MHz and it does cover Vodafone's extended 3G. Seeing 900MHz is being "reused" in Europe for 3G, Apple would be silly to not use it on a new handset.

Nothing like "Vodafone requested" - Vodafone New Zealand is one of the very few Vodafone doing 900MHz at the moment and the volume of sales here wouldn't make any difference in not having 900MHz support.

steve98: Hi - I'm from iPhonewzealand and I just wanted to say that although we are 'Pro-iPhone' in that we bloody love the iPhone (why else would we run a site about it) we are objective, and we're not BSing anybody in that article. We did our best to replicate the 'death grip' issue in the limited time we had to play with it but couldn't, however we were in Central Christchurch on Vodafone where signal was strong, so we can't vouch for how it handles weaker signals.

Seeing Apple is calling for a press conference this Friday (Saturday NZ time) I think a lot of people who couldn't see this problem - or simply accepted Apple's "software issue" explanation - will have a surprise.

Yes, but just to the dismay of some, Ben posted his iPhone 4 review where he writes:

"Yes, the reception issues are real, but I’d venture that the impact on a user is over-emphasised. Just last week I stated on the record to the NBR that I couldn’t replicate the grip-of-death. This was true at the time: I sat around at home and work, gripping the phone in many unnatural ways to try to make the signal drop, with no result. Then this week I sit down with that very same reporter in another part of town, and could repeatedly make the iPhone reception indicator drop from 5 bars to 1 by covering the bottom area of the phone with both hands. Go figure.
Then there’s the real world. A world where I make calls with my left hand and left ear (but I’m normal-handed). In this crazy-strange world, the iPhone 4 works perfectly. I’ve got no idea what the signal bars are doing because I don’t have an eye in my ear, but the reception is fine and I’ve dropped no calls.
