So what do you think the chances are that everyone with a 3G or 3GS or indeed any phone will be thinking about the possibility of getting one this week? And is it worth the upgrade?

Let's see - you get a higher-resolution screen 960x640 with 326PPI (pixels per inch) - not that I ever had a problem with a 3GS screen, or any screen really.

I can see my text just fine on my laptop, and the screen is only 98PPI. My current phone, an LG KM900, has 311 PPI. So what's the fuss there?

Facetime is just re-branded video calling which many phones can already do, it only calls other iPhone 4s, and only over WiFi. Boo, hiss.

Gyroscope? Meh. Longer battery life? I'd be shocked if they didn't. iMovie? I'd rather do it on a desktop or laptop.

No standard USB-type connection - the connector is Apple's own devil-pin design.

It can't run flash. Yes, HTML5, I know, but HTML5 is on the way - it's not quite here yet.

The multitasking is not exactly smiled upon... I'm running out of reasons here.

Oh, I do think the 5 megapixel camera with HD video and a new flash is quite attractive - especially considering the improved, back-lit sensor. Camera phones generally suffer from awful image quality, and the sensor is almost always the root of the problem.

And it does look quite nice. So that's a couple of reasons, at least.

But I'm just not seeing too many reasons to choose this over the 3GS. There are a few improvements, but they're not "WOW, LOOK AT THIS!" improvements.

The iPhone 4 is really only a few steps ahead of the 3GS, and this is reflected in their pricing.

With the 16GB iPhone 4 set to sell for $1099 outright, the 8GB 3GS remains $899 from the NZ Apple store - just $200 less than the 4.

Not to mention that the price of a 16GB 3GS from Vodafone is $1179! That's actually more than the new version... How does that work, Vodafone?

There are still plenty of iPhones and iPads for sale at old-market prices. I guess vendors are hoping to get their original margins before people catch on.

I don't think I'll be getting a 4, but I was hoping the 3GS would drop a bit lower. I know they are both great phones with fantastic features, but I still can't justify it, as hard as I try.

I want to love you, iPhone 4, but you're just not the phone I expected you to be.

End quote.

I want to get one - but I have read that they may be fixing the aerial in the white model. So I'm waiting...

They already have fixed the antenna issue, free bumpers. Antenna issue is just the bridging of the two metal strips on the outside of the phone where the wee gap is. Big deal.

Everytime I pick up my samsung phone I have right now it loses 2 bars. So if I am in 2 bar coverGe I lose signal. I just hold it differently and it works fine.

With the free bumper on the iPhone 4 you can hold it however you want.

As for a reason to get the iPhone 4, first thing that comes to mind is speed. I hate latency and impute lag and with ios 4 it certainly has that.

I don't like accessories such as bumpers. If they don't fix it I might get the 3Gs, or some duct tape.

Are you left handed? Do you usually hold your phone by the bottom left corner? if not then whats the issue?

Yes Im a Lefty, but I am a fan of simplicity, having covers and changing my style for a device is total BS. I'd rather downgrade to a 3GS.

Clearly, your laptop screen is crap. :D

Jokes aside, the PPI of the iPhone makes the screen a lot sharper compared to the 3GS. And it's not "just" the PPI. The high resolution also helps.

Facetime is just re-branded video calling which many phones can already do, it only calls other iPhone 4s, and only over WiFi. Boo, hiss.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Gyroscope? Meh.

More precise GPS applications are something I'm looking forward to. My current GPS (Sygic) sucks at discerning what direction I'm pointed at when I stopped at a traffic light. This is ONE use case. I'm sure there are others.

Longer battery life? I'd be shocked if they didn't.

Battery life is not something smartphones are known for. Just look at the latest HTC handsets. Given that batteries don't follow Moore's Law, it's quite an achievement if Apple indeed managed to squeeze 40% more juice (Apple's claim, take with giant boulder of salt) out of a form-factor that is 3mm thinner than the 3GS.

iMovie? I'd rather do it on a desktop or laptop.

To the YouTube generation, this is gonna be a big thing.

No standard USB-type connection - the connector is Apple's own devil-pin design.

I think it's fair to say that Apple's connector is pretty much a standard now, given the number of devices that support it's connection. Also, if you want to charge your non-Apple phone, what cable would you use? Do you carry around a mini-USB to USB?

It can't run flash. Yes, HTML5, I know, but HTML5 is on the way - it's not quite here yet.

Define "not quite here yet". The main pusher of Flash (YouTube) has HTML5 for most of its videos now. And gaming in Flash is something I don't care about (probably because Flash on a Mac usually sucks).

If you wait around to launch hardware AFTER the technology caught up, then you'll be doing the same thing as everybody else, right? Apple is known for trying to beat the market (sometimes failing to do so), so I don't think they would put Flash in just in the meantime while they "wait for HTML5" to become mainstream.

The multitasking is not exactly smiled upon...

To be honest, I wish they removed the multi-tasking altogether. I hate it, as it sucks the battery dry if you leave the apps all 'open'.

I'm running out of reasons here.

You pretty much covered all of the anti-Apple default statements, but I'll give you some more:

- Apple's anti-jailbreak stance
- the App Store draconian policies
- having to use iTunes to sync it

Oh, I do think the 5 megapixel camera with HD video and a new flash is quite attractive - especially considering the improved, back-lit sensor. Camera phones generally suffer from awful image quality, and the sensor is almost always the root of the problem.

Agree with the camera and the looks, although with the apparent need for a "bumper", it becomes a bit fugly.

But I'm just not seeing too many reasons to choose this over the 3GS. There are a few improvements, but they're not "WOW, LOOK AT THIS!" improvements.

The 3GS was "only a few steps ahead" of the 3G, and the price difference showed it. But the difference in speed was mind-boggling.

The iPhone 4 is a much bigger change from the 3GS (you listed them up there), but Apple can't over-charge it, or people will just not buy it. Would you rather Apple charged $1599 for the 16GB just to show how big of a difference it is? ;)

As to Vodafone's pricing, I offer no comment. I do wish we had more choices, like in AU with the subsidies and etc.

All of the above is, of course, my own 0.02 cents.

I'll almost certainly get one.

I really wanted to feel the love of a high end Android device, but they have too many issues for mine

Current phone is the iPhone 3G which is a lot slower than it used to be, so an iPhone 4 with the faster processor should be just the job.

I really wanted to love the Desire or Galaxy S, they're just not the phones I wanted them to be ;)

Yes. Lol. Less people interested in iPhone 4 the better. So we don't need to wait for hours to get one, and it won't b sold out lol. But I'm afraid there are far too many apple fanboys out there in NZ. We just need to hold that phone the way as told by steve jobs, we can all be fine. I'm afraid that iPhone 4 will be sold out Again within 3 to 5 hours on Friday morning. The reason not many people buying the ipads is because iphone 4 is just around the corner.
