Sparky221: Curious at how the price of an iPhone 4 from the NZ Apple Online store stacks up? Below is a comparison of prices for all countries where it is currently available to be purchased outright.

Included are both inclusive and exclusive GST/VAT prices given the excl GST/VAT price is probably the best like for like comparison. NZ doesn't fare particularly well, although the Aussie's hardly have it much better.

Cheapest Countries:
- Canada
- Hong Kong
- Singapore

You need to also list which ones are sold unlocked and not tied to any carrier.

The places with unlocked phones may be more expensive in order to remove the potential profit from parallel exporting them. They are also looked at much more closely by the vendor. Try ordering 10 from Vodafone and see what happens. :-)

I don't think you can get an unlocked iPhone in Canada.....My uncle's was locked to his carrier when he visited here, so he couldn't just pop in a local SIM. If Apple store sell them unlocked, then fine. But in Canada the prices may not include the sales tax.

really?

sure, Canada, HK and Singapore are quite a bit cheaper, but the rest of the countries the difference is marginal - mostly no more than 5%.

A simple ranking doesn't really tell you much. No of S.D. above the mean would be a better indication

I wouldn't say that sort of difference represents being badly screwed when you consider our geographical isolation and size.

The devout dont let facts get in the way of a good beatup!

I note on the order page you can add 'Applecare Warranty'.. for well over $100.. So is this not required (just like other retailers who try to push their 'extended warranties' ?

Chiefie - am I right in saying that even though iPhone warranty is regionalised, if you buy APPLECARE then you are then covered for 2 years INTERNATIONALLY? That was my understanding.

That said, there are comments in iphonewzealand suggesting that people have had warranty service for iPhone 3GS and 3G outside of the market they purchased the phone from. I am not accepting this as evidence for an international warranty just yet though.

wellygary: I am fairly sure the Canadian prices are missing their Harmonized Sales Tax, which is around 15% in most provinces, but it varies, so I think the quoted price is Exc tax.

Hmm - you could be right, however going right through to the online checkout this doesn't seem to be added on. For other country stores the GST excl price is shown once it is added to your basket.

The prices have all been sourced directly from the apple online store in countries where they are available for outright purchase so are all sold unlocked.

@Ahmad, no. AppleCare for iPhone is regionalised. You get maximum/total of 2 years, wherever the origin of the phone is purchased from. So if you bought an iPhone assigned as Singapore stock, and purchased AppleCare Warranty, it is extending the warranty for service within Singapore only. Not International.

AppleCare Protection Plan is not like a retailers extended warranty. Note that retailers like NL and HN have extended warranties that are just a whitelabel of another companies warranty product and essentially an insurance cover. When you claim, with these extended warranties, you have to do the running around, call the insurer, arrange shipment, and then all they do is receive the assessment from repairer (another party) and then approve the repair. You do the followup. So recently to have a repair there were 3 parties involved and it took 4 weeks (2 weeks in assessment and approval) and also a week sitting waiting to be shipped. (plus another 4days transit) - all for a 90min repair.

Have had to exercise extended warranty from both HN and NL, and have also used AppleCare these are chalk and cheese.

edit: also note that the AppleCarePP is also 2years of technical support in addition to the warranty.

I really hate people that say things without backing them up. Actually it's the misinformation that I hate, not the person. Too many experts that just post "don't worry iPhone warranty is international - I have tried it!" without anything to back it up (or even responding to further questioning).

Have to correct myself here. AppleCare Warranty has 90 days expert telephone technical support, and 12 months service. AppleCare Protection Plan extends both to total of 2 years.

I was under the impression its cheapest for the iPhone there.

On the upside your credit card (gold) should protect you from damage to products you purchase using it but im not sure of the time frame. possibly 180d?
