Handsomedan:

lane guidance is excellent.

Have you seen it work anywhere else other than Auckland?

Nope.

Akl Motorways are the only place I've ever seen it activate.

Wills1: As a new Iphone user is this app worth $85?

Yes, is easily worth the money!  I don't use it much around Welly, but when I travel it's great for getting around in a different city.  I also bought a cigarette charger, retractable USB cable and car cradle from Deal Extreme so I can mount it on the dash - works a treat!

Thanks for the helpful replies re: the data and storage of maps. Felt a bit foolish asking it but now I'm really glad I did. Seems like a really good app for the price!

I really don;t think you'd find many (if any) iPhone users of the Tom Tom app that would say it wasn't good value for money...provided you actually use it!

I've been using mine in the iPhone 4 around Chc and it is fantastic. Accurate, clear and works fine on its own gps sittingon the passenger seat. Will TM my 'old' tomtom.

All the apps I bought have more than paid for themselves. Most of them get daily use. Except the games...who has time for those? :P

Yes. Although if I were new to iPhone I would be weighing up the pros and cons of TomTom with the two new apps just released, Navigon and Sygic Aura.

I bought TomTom when it first released at $149 and can definitely say it was worth it. There are other options now so not so specifically cut and dry. I'd love to try Navigon actually, but missed the $39.95 intro price!

All 3 will turn your phone into a full featured GPS device, and with free map updates being the norm, you can't really go wrong for $85.

TomTom use a map database that is locally maintained, and regularly updated whereas many of the lower cost applications don't access these.

If you aren't getting lane guidance maybe the map database in your unit is not the latest available....

That's where maintaining apps on the iPhone is very easy. You either have the latest version or you don't, the App store will tell you that automatically. There's nothing else to install. I definitely have the latest version, but sounds like lane guidance is Auckland motorways only at this stage.

Full screen lane guidance in Wellington works very well, however it only seems to be active on a State Highway 1. The roadway from Ngauranga Gorge to the Hutt Valley (i.e. State Highway 2) is not considered to be a "motorway" and the full screen lane guidance does not appear, however if your driving in from Lower Hutt, you should get Lane Guidance once you pass the Interchange at Ngauranga.

The only irritating thing I have found with the latest version and the previous release was the inclusion of part of the mapping file name in the voice announcement of the motorway name i.e. something like "tele atlas SH 1" or similar!  Once that is fixed, it will be just about spot on.

Note that this is not 'full screen' lane guidance but in the directions at bottom of screen.
