scottjpalmer: Why do you say it will be unavailable on 2degrees?

Current tethering is operator dependant overseas but works fine on all 3 networks here . . .

Okay - I always just assumed that I couldn't do tethering at all as I can't find any option in the settings on my iPhone to enable it.

Is there a step-by-step guide anywhere that gives details of how to set up and use tethering? I've just tried fumbling around with the cable and bluetooth connections on my Macbook pro but I got a bit lost and to be honest I'm still unconvinced that the functionality is even available on my device.

Tethering can be found on your iPhone by going to:

Settings>General>Network>Internet Tethering

The instructions to set it up are on that final screen.

Thanks, Corksta. Unfortunately I don't have that option on my iPhone (3GS, 4.2.1, purchased online from Apple).

If other 2degrees users are able to access tethering then that seems really strange, unless they have jail broken.

If you are using 2degrees without a bundle, go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and copy the Cellular Data APN to the Tethering APN box.

Where do you live? I've heard (but not confirmed) that tethering won't work if you're roaming on Vodafone.

Magic! Thanks!

What APN should I be using for 2degrees? At the moment I have www.vodafone.net.nz because I found that I had to enter that in order for 2degrees national roaming to work, but I guess I shouldn't have that APN set when I'm in 2degrees territory.

You should use internet for both internet access and tethering. Null APN will work in 2degrees coverage, but not in Vodafone roaming (or international roaming for that matter). As you note, however, we will silently translate www.vodafone.net.nz back to internet for handsets that are pre-configured with Vodafone settings.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

That is an interesting conversation as with the vodafone carrier bundle, I can't set the APN for tethering (3gs 4.2.1) - I just get the on/off option for tethering.

Will have a play later to see whether putting in my XT sim changes this.

I can confirm that wi-fi hotspot works on XT.  I updated by iphone 4 to 4.3 and did the following

  1. in settings/general/network/cellular data put internet.telecom.co.nz in the tethering APN entry

  2. power cycle the phone (power button/slide to power off.

  3. in settings/general/network there now should be a personal hotspot.  Configure this and your away

riahon: I am not following something here. At the moment I regularly tether my iphone to macbook via bluetooth. Is this new feature going to allow me to do the same thing but via a wifi network transmitted from my iphone? If correct I assume will allow me to connect more than one device.

Yes, up to 5 devices connected to your iPhone via wifi.

chrisjunkie: Damn and to think I purchased MyWi about a month ago... Never mind, will be a cool feature to have, opening mywi and enabling it is just downright annoying at times (if it even wants to work!)

You would still need to access settings and switch it on each time you wanted to use it.

I personally use PDANet for creating a wifi hotspot with my IP4. Spent the extra money required for a 3g iPad on more capacity instead. Works great.

Careful, it sounds like you are making life easy for your customers there...  :-P

Heaven forbid all carriers should silently translate each others APNs etc to ensure universal compatibility #bwahahaawhatever

How did you update to 4.3? I tried to update from 4.2.1 and it said I had the latest update available.

It's a developer only beta update at this stage, not a public release.

Thanks everyone who has assisted, and apologies for dragging the thread slightly off topic.

Now that I've got access to the conventional tethering feature I'm really looking forward to the personal hotspot feature when 4.3 is available.
