I forgot to ask...Which model is it? 3G 3GS & 4s are easy to open up so you can let them dry completely. Watch a few YouTube tutorials & you might work up the courage. The only way to stop the rust is to completely dry it out.

Thanks heaps for all your replies.
I downloaded Tiny Umbrella to no avail. I also tried Black rain (?) and one other program that a dude was using on a youtube tutorial but none of them seemed to knock it out of recovery mode which was annoying.
Ive also tried holding down home and power numerous times but that didn't get it out of recovery either.
I guess I should try and just leave it to dry out in the hot water cupboard and then hope next time I plug it in to iTunes, for some miraculous reason it turns on fine for me??

SteveON: actually if you sink it in a bucket of iso alcohol to displace the water. The main reason the phone will die is because the contacts will rust, leave it in for 12 hours.

The advantage of this method is that if the phone still doesn't work, you drink the alcohol to numb the pain associated with the cost of getting a replacement

I think you will find that you aren't going to get it into any usable form by trying to kick it out of recovery mode, as you have already gotten half-way through a restore.

this means you have an incomplete image on the phone, it probably doesn't have enough data written to actually boot, or it is encountering another error.

you best bet is to follow a youtube howto on removing the cover and battery, drying out the phone, and saving up for a new one, because if it doesn't work straight away out of water (and you can't remove the battery like other phones) you are pretty much stuffed I'm sorry to say.

What version on Itunes are you using?

Blackrain would jail break your device if your running 3.2 firmware not sure about kicking it out of recovery, however Ireb may help as well

Really the only way to save the phone when it initlaly got wet was to immediately disconnect it from it's power supply, and open it up to allow all the water to dry. Leaving it in a bag of rice for only 24 hours was nowhere near enough time, and it will still probably have water in it, as capillary action will mean water will be caught in many places, and it is now probably fried. I would say leave it at least a week to dry out. Insurance maybe your only option if you have cover that will cover accidents like that.

Call Apple and tell them exactly what happened. They will most likely offer you a return and replace refurb at a hugely discounted price.

Yea I think refurbs are around 300 for non warranty repairs. At least the people
I know that have had non warranty repairs have had to pay 300

Your best bet is to get a repair done, or buy a new one. Seriously, once water damaged, there's nothing much you can do... Things will rust, and the most important things are the ones going first.

Just a reminder to people: don't buy second hand iPhones from Trade Me in the next few months ;)
