actually it's almost the exact opposite.

XT handsets are always useable on Voda or 2Degrees (sometimes not with nationwide 3G, but definitely at least GSM) whereas Voda and 2D handsets probably won't work on XT (except the iphone)

In respect to this conversation we are discussing iphones/smartphones so the ability to process 3g data would be a pre-requisite so therefore my point stands

XT Works just fine with iPhones... Infact in my experience data speeds are much much higher than Vodafones.

Most XT smartphones WILL work on Voda and 2D for 3G in the majority of populated areas, just not all over the country where you will instead get only GSM.
Take the3G coverage you get on the iphone 3G or 3GS on Voda and that is the 3G coverage you will get with most XT phones. and of course you still get voice and txt everywhere else.

Whereas almost no voda/2D phones will work on XT for voice, SMS or data (except where it has 2100 for infill ie. hardly anywhere).

Considering the exchange rates..VF are doing a bit of gouging..maybe they wont be offering iphone 5 exclusively.

I would consider myself an Apple fan (at least when it comes to iOS devices) and have an iPhone 4, an iPod touch, and my wife has an iPad. But at the price Vodafone are charging for the iPhone 4, I won't be buying one for my wife to replace her ageing Telecom phone when the old CDMA network is switched off. It's still a while off, so I'm holding out for the price to go back to what it was when I bought my iPhone, but I'm not prepared to pay an extra $300 to Vodafone for a device which is identical to one I already own and likely to replaced imminently by a newer version...

The "list" price for the iPhone4 is set by Apple, who in effect control this by setting a price from their own online store.

I don't think Vodafone are ripping people off in any way, all they've done is reduce the level of rebate they are offering when you sign up for a contract, a discount that was significantly out of proportion to any other phone they offer, and also significantly higher than you'll get from a XT or 2degrees handset rebate.

If you bought an iphone 4 16GB as a gift today it would cost USD$599. ~ NZD$744

Travelex - your CC is likely more expensive, and won't work on the apple site if it isn't US so you would need to buy from a reseller.

There are a few riders to this:

Sales Tax - (might 11% in CA) but not applicable in all states - like NY (Still need to consider GST @ 15% onto the shipping and base price when it goes through customs)

Shipping - needs to be reshipped as Apple won't ship from US Styore to NZ so maybe NZD$30

The need to sim unlock - do this myself using internet instructions (haven't looked into it but presumably possible)

Total Cost - 774 * 1.15 = ~ NZD$890

Plus you will need a US/NZ charger adapter and a carrier bundle (depending on the carrier).

So for that hassle you save NZD$233

Which is pretty much the price now on Vodafone for 2 years of your life (on the cheapest plan).

I never said it was a rip off. Vodafone are entitled to charge whatever they like for the iPhone. But whether you classify it as a reduced rebate or a price rise, the facts remain the same. It costs more to buy the iPhone 4 now than it did a couple of months ago. Yes, it was nice that Vodafone gave such a generous rebate, certainly more than for other phones, but now it is not so nice a rebate. I wish them luck selling a phone with an effective $330 price increase (at least, on the model/plan I was looking at).

Could well be. My main reason for looking at another iPhone is the iOS "ecosystem" and being able to share apps between devices. Otherwise, Android might have been a starter for me. Do prefer the iOS interface, as I've said elsewhere in these forums...
