It is apparently built on their open-sourced jabber protocol xmpp (along with Facetime and the push server mechanism).

Apple did not invent XMPP.

Sorry, it frustrates me when people credit Apple with stuff they didn't even have a hand in, simply because an Apple product has it.

So maybe not invent it, but I was under the impression they do/did contribute code to the project...

I think there is a Bonjour implementation as a part of it?

As I understand it Bonjour and Apple had no part at all in XMPP, they are simply using it as open source material.

Apple took a lot of ideas from Microsoft and Windows Phone for iOS 5 and Lion.

Versioning, Live Mesh/Skydrive, Wireless Sync, Camera button on lock screen, Notifications UI, Twitter integration, Auto Uploading of pics to iCloud, Split keyboard for in iOS 5 which was shown in Windows 8.

I am not annoyed though as it clearly shows that Microsoft is innovating here and others follow.

Do whatever you want to do man.

To be quite honest between current MS, Google and various others inovations, these new Apple features are more like catchups with everyone else.

But I guess in the old days, Windows was a copy from Apples desktop OS, and at the end of the day, with these big corps busy innovating, and taking on each others ideas, the speed of change will be faster

It's not about the hardware button but rather letting a user take a photo while phone is locked.

Another *magical* thing implemented in iOS 5 is

iPhone camera app now has a new feature – while in the view finder swiping from left to right now takes you to the camera roll, and if you continue swiping you can scroll through your pictures. A tap on on the picture brings up a menu which will take you back to the view finder.

WP7 has had this feature since launch and there is even a patent for it, registered by Microsoft. Is Apple going to pay?

Looks like the 3GS won't have any of the photo editing features such as crop or red-eye reduction etc...
I wonder why Apple isn't implementing these features? The hardware is certainly fast enough.

I guess they just want people to upgrade to the latest model?

At least it has all of the other features that iOS5 has I guess!

Split keyboard for in iOS 5 which was shown in Windows 8.

LOL, yeah I guess they saw the preview from Microsoft a few days prior and quickly worked overtime to add that feature to iOS5.

I think there will be a concerted push to level up the features. Iphone has always been the premium phone, and clearly the only "real" smartphone. Now, Android and Microsoft are true players, but Apple is adding real features in iOS5. For a piece of software it is still a while away, who knows, there may be more to come.

i think people are quick to forget, that what was shown at WWDC was only the first beta
we have a good 3 months, before we get it.

im sure alot of things will change and be updated,

im looking forward to seeing notification center,
and iCloud.

we might not get itunes match right away,
but the other features on offer with the service look great
