Over in the UK currently and had an Ipod Nano where I registered details, got the packaging a couple of weeks later and sent off. Await delivery of a new nano, which if like the last one will be used when flying and rarely otherwise!

Yeah... seems that most of us who have registered for a replacement are in limbo. Interesting that it seems that in the States there were a number of people who received a refurbished nano 1st gen as replacements but now there are people receiving 6th gen nanos as replacements. It'll be interesting to see what happens for us...

Had a nose at my service order and they have not even updated it to reflect receipt, even although it was sent a couple of weeks ago. Maybe struggling a bit with christmas and recall! Oh well will wait and see with baited breath what I get back.

Ok, so I am reading this thread and as I read I get an email from the front desk here at the office that a package has arrived...

... and it is the box for me to send my iPod back to Apple in.

Interesting to see that some people may be getting generation 6. I'm not going to cry whatever I get as the pod that is going back to Apple has given 5 years of faithful service and almost single handily made me a iPhone buying fanboi.

Having said that i can't think the stock of 1st gen nano's can be that big so I it isn't stupid that they had to start sending something else back.

Will keep you all informed.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Is it worth scouring trademe in search of old 1st gen Nano's to get upgraded for free? Or are there safeguards against that sort of thing..

I don't think there is an official prohibition against that but:

It's getting kind of late in the game
You may well be swapping a 1st gen nano for a refurbished 1st nano, less what paid on TradeMe
On TradeMe you might not be getting what you think you are getting... particularly as it is getting late in the game.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Yeah I submitted mine on 14 November and have it registered. On the tracking website I'm on Step 1 Registration. Step 3 is sending me the box to return my iPod in. Very slooooooooooow but I guess they have a few to replace worldwide...

I am not a fan of the new nanos. One of the reasons I liked the old ones, was the click wheel, which you could operate in your pocket. Think they would be better to replace with the last version that had the click wheel, but guessing they wouldn't have much stock of those either. But I guess it is a free upgrade/downgrade whichever way you think of it.

Don't think that Apple have agreed to send other than a replacement i-pod 1st Generation, there are reports that some people in the US have received 6th Generation ones but no guarantees. More likely to get a 1st generation which may be a refurbished item.

I like the classic look of the 1st gen so I'd be fine with a refurb but it does seem like it will be a 6th Gen.

All the user posts I've seen say that they have received 6th Gen units. Saw a post from someone in Sydney who's replacement units serial number is that of a 6th Gen

Oh well will wait and see what they send to us in the UK. While I rarely used the old one I did like its size as it fitted into the pocket in my Sennhesser headphones that I use when on a plane.

I have an ipod nano that is still in its box, never been unwrapped. I think its a first gen. Does anyone think it would be worthwhile to put it in for the recall?

@ kiwifidget - totally up to you. You could visit the Apple site & put in your serial number and then see if it's included in the recall. If it is then you'd have to decide if you'd prefer to just hang onto it as a collectors piece, maybe start using it yourself (I guess that in the slim chance that it overheats you may not have any comeback to Apple since they've recalled it), send it in and 'maybe' get it swapped for a 6th gen 8GB model, or sell it to someone who prefers the design & clickwheel of the 1st gen Nanos.
If your serial number is not included in the recall then only some of the options apply....
