OK, now I'm even more confused :-)

For the videos we've purchased from iTunes, they're downloaded to our Mac, and we can then copy them to our iOS devices, or stream over our LAN to the AppleTV. IOW, we take the one time hit to our data allowance, and then have unlimited access to it.

If it was hosted in iCloud, every time we wanted to watch it, we'd be impacting on our data allowance. The only advantage I see to iCloud is that I can stream it to an iCloud enabled device when away from my LAN. Or that I don't take the hit to my data allowance until the I actually go to watch it (although that is tenuous advantage at best, as I'd not purchase something I never intend to watch).

i purchased a few movies a couple of years ago on my ATV1 and was pissed to learn that after i did a factory reset (deleting the movies on the device) i had to pay full price again to redownload them. ?thats when i stopped buying movies via itunes.?

That blows. But I think it has changed now with your purchases being stored. Did you contact Apple? In my experience they are pretty decent at handling issues like this.

You don't want to have to rely on the content stored on a PC at all. Is that your primary beef with current status quo?

You don't want to have to rely on the content stored on a PC at all. Is that your primary beef with current status quo?

Yeah to a bit, but I take your point (and agree) if I want to play in on multiple devices then download it). But for a one off watch (say a rental) Just stream it directly.

Does this mean that, apart from the firmware upgrade, the only new feature of the new AppleTV is 1080p playback? If so then... WIN! Our TV only natively supports 720p anyway. It was bought in the days when 1080p HD TVs had a hefty premium, and there was much confusion over HD Ready vs Full HD.

Right you are. Although as the owner of a 1080-capable TV with a 2nd-gen Apple TV, it's Good Enough™ and I see no point in upgrading either.

Now, the iPad 3- that's interesting.

Not so much a beef with me. I just wanted to be able to purchase movies via Apple TV. While it seems this is still not possible (and you have to wonder why? Purchase on Apple TV and stream it??) this is an improvement.

How to get around the music is another issue. Be nice to be able to play music direct from Apple TV with out other devices needing to be on with iTunes open, but I appreciate this is not that simple and playing direct from a iPad or Phone is a nice solution.

I would like to set up some sort of server to keep the media always accessible but have yet found something simple?

Yeah that is a bit of a PITA. Especially if your iTunes copy is run on a PC with multiple users. I'm forever logging myself out, stopping iTunes in the process, and then cursing when I have to go from the lounge to the office to start it back up again so I can access my library.

This is more of an issue now that we're in the process of selling our house, as my physical music collection is all packed away. Its great that I can still easily access it all on our stereo in the lounge, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Before I got the Apple TV, I tried various DNLA server options using my PS3 to stream the content, but none of them worked as well as I wanted (including the much recommended PS3 Media Server). The Apple TV, OTOH, works really well. And it has the added advantage of having absolutely no issue with streaming the DRMed movies purchased via iTunes (which is an issue I wish didn't exist at all, but thats best left to a separate thread).

It does have an occasional issue where it loses its wifi connection, requiring a router reboot to fix. But thats a problem I'm having with all my wireless devices ATM, and my router is almost certainly to blame here. I will be replacing that, but this will probably co-incide with a move to a new house, so I know exactly what sort of gear I'll need (one of the houses we're looking at purchasing has a fully wired LAN, with ethernet ports in every room (except for the toilet (I think))).

Yeah, I saw that mentioned elsewhere. However, with an impending increase of mortgage, such toys will be deemed unnecessary luxuries for a wee while. Especially when we already have a workable enough media streaming solution.

I think it is interesting that they have only put an A5 single core processor in this. I would have thought it would be at least dual core for adding future features. It seems financial commentators are expecting a proper apple tv later this year, with an actual screen. It could be an awesome device if they did.

I don't know how they cope with itunes home sharing - that's the pain of the ATV of course. XBMC on the other hand gets around this but you're stuck with the jailbreak issue.

Neither. That said I'd probably rather use XBMC or plex for music. Or Keep iTunes on a server (which I kind of do now).
