Benjip:
IsThisOneGood: Hopefully pre orders from Apple start 11 AM today. I can't believe the carriers have put up pre orders before Apple itself.

I'm hopeful too. Where did this 11AM rumour come from - I've only seen it mentioned in this thread?

No I only heard it from this thread. And from what I can remember pre orders also started 11 ish for the 4S

I pre-ordered iphone 5 without contract last night but this morning vodafone canceled my order. This is really sad. :(

Did they give any reason for cancelling the order..?

If their system allowed you to order one without any contract then its their fault.. not yours..

Post this in the Vodafone section or ask @Johnr for help

It did say clearly that the iPhone 5 was only available with a Smart Data plan so using a bug in their checkout to try to avoid it isn't really going to hold any weight - good luck to you though.

I just called Apple who were useless, first off they tried to tell me they hadn't even announced an NZ launch date at all, I had to point him at their own press release! They had no information at all on pre-ordering so don't get your hopes up for anything happening today (I hope I'm wrong but it looks like only VF/Telecom will be taking pre-orders).

I called Apple to be told that it is 'not called the iPhone 5, it is the New iPhone'. I promptly hung up.

comparing telecom and VF, seems that VF plan more attractive to me.

Sent a Tweet to @TelecomNZ this morning enquiring about Prepaid/availability to buy the iPhone 5 outright.
"@TelecomNZ will you guys be offering the iPhone 5 next week (WLG Willis St Store, midnight opening) on prepay like the 4S last year?"

Received a reply later this morning from RI (Richard Irvine) that: "Not to begin with sorry mate ^RI"

So thought that I would ask if they had any *rough* idea on when it would be available to buy outright/on prepay: "@TelecomNZ thanks for the reply. Any idea when you might be offering it on prepaid then, so I know how long I have to wait?"

Response: "No sorry mate, can't give you a steer on that at the moment  ^RI"

FYI - Full Twitter conversation thread: https://twitter.com/jeremykjtan/status/248889340380475394

Hope that this helps those looking to buy outright - Looks like our only option will be to wait for Apple NZ preorders direct. Waiting for midnight (for flagship Telecom/Vodafone stores) or 7am (for other stores) may be a waste of time..

--Limited availability on launch day perhaps, or perhaps carriers purposely trying to force customers to sign up to a 24-month locked-in plan?

khull:
BigMrC: For anybody interested, I'm only 3 months into my latest 24 month voda contract and it cost me less to break contract ($821) + get iphone 5 on plan ($149 iphone5 32GB $120plan) = $970 than it would to buy the iphone5 outright ($1199).

Are you currently paying $120 for your existing contract?

No I'm currently on the $90 plan, breaking and moving to the $120 plan

It’s not really surprising to be honest.
The carriers will only have a very limited amount of stock initially and since they make virtually no money selling an iPhone standalone with no guarantee of future revenues,  they don’t want to waste what few handsets they have on customers that are less profitable.

You wouldn’t want to sell your last iPhone5 to a prepaid customer who may just end up going to 2Degrees only to have a guy walk in 5 mins later willing to sign up to a $120/month 24 month contract.

If they had loads of stock I'm sure they would be quite happy selling them on prepaid, but if they only have 5-10 per store then they need to get the best customers possible on the phone, which isn't prepay

Ok. Seems like Telecom had learned its lesson from last year then. Because they sold 4S on prepay with free sim last year. But I immediately switched to 2Degrees haha.

Man NZ is always screwed. Last year we had to wait a whole month for the 4S.This year we managed to get on the 2nd wave release date but the carriers mess it up with no prepay and apple offering no preorder.

She sounded dead serious, so I hung up out of frustration.
