You do not notice the notch after about 30 seconds of first getting the phone....

Watching movies on it, they actually don't extend all the way to the notch - as the screen is so wide I guess.

Both the left and right sides are a strip of black - so it's not like the notch gets in the way of movies anyway.

I can assure you the notch will not have any impact on your life at all..

I was incredibly anti notch and scoffed at the idea of moving to an X from my iPhone 6S.

It wasn't till I was in the Gold Coast for Christmas and went to the Apple Store and had a play with one did I start warming up to it. It was my wife that finally convinced me to get it, so that's how I ended up with the X.

I've now got the XS Max as I prefer the larger screen, I can say the more you use it the less you notice the notch. I don't want a lot of videos so missing a small bit of video to the notch is a non issue for me.

In games I don't notice the notch affecting game play either.

You've always got 14 days to return it for a refund if the notch really bothers you so I'd do it.

: Apple’s iPhone Xs is faster than an iMac Pro on the Speedometer 2.0 JavaScript benchmark

Every other chip maker (not outed as rank amateurs) on the planet just sh*t their collective pants.

David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and founder and CTO at Basecamp, via Twitter:

The iPhone XS is faster than an iMac Pro on the Speedometer 2.0 JavaScript benchmark. It’s the fastest device I’ve ever tested. Insane 45% jump over the iPhone 8/X chip. How does Apple do it?!

Yes, you read that right.

Hope he is proven right using other test methods

Hey folks - question :-

Toying with the idea of getting an Iphone XS Max.

Whilst I've had a look in-store and I quite liked it from a build and size/shape perspective - the thing that stopped me buying there and then was the notch.

I'm coming from a 6S - and one of my primary use cases is video - Netflix etc.

To those of you living with one already (or those with an X) - how do you find the scaling with the Notch? To me it seemed that all the benefits of the screen size and minimal bezel get thown away as it scales the video down... or you watch full size and deal with a nasty bite out of the left hand side :/.

Is it something you get used to? Aren't bothered by? Drives you nuts?

My current thoughts are (although I'm hoping someone can explain it to me) - dropping that much on a phone for the screen quality/size and then having that bloody notch in the way might drive me nuts dealing with it day-to-day.

I watch quite a bit of video on my X

I pretty much always scale up the view to fill the screen.

Notch does not bother me at all. a lot of video is made to be viewed largely toward the centre anyway, so it becomes a bit of a moot point.

Also - many movies and videos have darkness in the background and notch falls into that dark abyss nicely (especially with the black blacks on the X screen)

Hope everyone has an awesome time un-boxing and enjoying their new purchases tomorrow coollaughing

My Apple Store order wasn't going to arrive until some time this week so I ended up going into Noel Leeming on Friday afternoon and buying it there and cancelling my Apple Store order while i waited to pay.  Amazing screen on the Xs Max and now just about perfect - can't actually think of what else i would want from a hardware perspective now other than maybe better cameras - first world issues i guess.

My Apple Leather Case came today. I feel so much better about having a case on my Max, she’s pretty slippery otherwise.

I did it. I wasn't going to. But I did.

iPhone XS Max, 256GB in Silver - picking it up tomorrow morning.

Still on the fence, but we'll see how we go.

Any thoughts on the watch 4 yet. I’ve got a decent credit to use at NL and a Fitbit to sell.

I got a series 4 over the weekend. I was never a watch person and thought having a smartwatch would be completely unnecessary, but within two days I feel like this is a fantastic companion to an iPhone. The fitness features alone I feel are worth it for the price - much better than my previous Garmin vivosmart HR fitness tracker. It's like having an accountability partner on your wrist. I also found myself checking all my notifications, appointments, reminders, weather etc on my watch rather than my iPhone because it was more convenient than having to pull out my phone from my pocket. I had a try of the series 3 at the store and felt it was too blocky, and it made the bezels look thicker than they are. Series 4 is not only slightly bigger but the curved, rounded corners make it look much more elegant. I love how much you can customise your watch faces - as simple or as functional as you want. This might just be the honeymoon phase, but I'm absolutely loving my watch.

Every new iphone since the first model comes out with 'stronger glass'. But, the latest iphone still shatters just like the first ever iphone... not exeptional at all and misleading at best.

This is what they say this year....

"Exceptional materials. The most durable glass ever in a smartphone."

Doesn't seem exceptional at all, people have been doing drop tests and they shatter just as easily as the first iphone.

It could well be stronger. By 0.0001% each time.

That certainly isn't how many people feel. I certainly notice it when I have used one. The notch was a compromise design solution. I understand they were trying to get the touch ID under the screen at one point. IMO they could have made the XR cheaper by putting touch ID under the screen and not using the face ID technology, and then getting rid of the notch, but that would make it potentially look better than the XS. There is the front facing camera to house, but other manufacturers have made a motorised up and down one to get over this problem.

All depends on luck and how it is dropped. But smashing the back glass of the phone I have heard is very expensive and difficult to replace due to the way it is made. Where on other phones I have heard it can be a lot easier to replace the back glass.

"Get over" this problem? I would say it equally is a work around.

More moving parts to break. I'd be more worried about that little motor breaking, either due to dirt getting caught, sat on accidentally while open + many other situations.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see a phone without a notch, but it's something easy for me to live with personally, in order to keep front facing camera, face ID and the other features.

The in-display finger print reader would have been awesome, but now that Apple have moved to FaceID, I'd be surprised to see them swing back the other way.

I wonder if this "most durable" glass is sourced from the same manufacturer that makes Apple's "sapphire crystal" rear camera lens cover that tests show scratches just as easily as tempered glass?
