Once you upgrade to IOS6 google maps is effectivly gone. It gets replaced by apple maps when used within apps. Trademe (property section you can view map of a house), and RealEstate app for example continue to work, but you just see Apple maps instead of Google within their Apps. I find the Google Earth app is good now if you need decent satellite pics.

Half the Otago Harbour Basin appears as land area for me, pretty rough around the edges. Not what I expect from Apple at all.

Some of the errors in the new map app are hilarious! Have a look at this article.

Whole cities are missing, lots of businesses are shown when they closed down years ago, weird graphic glitches in the satellite views, wrong names used for locations...

Completely unacceptable from Apple. This is has been released in production as a 0.x Beta product.

They should have released it as a beta and kept the existing app for now, imagine the fun everyone would be having searching through the "beta" for glitches and bugs, instead, because of their thermonuclear on Google policy, they royally screw over their customers by release a half-baked product into production.

There is also talk of Apple denying Google the ability to release a Google Maps app (remember the previous ios Maps app was made by Apple, it just used Google's data).

have just added maps.google.com as a safari app. Apples version is pretty poor when it comes to zooming in on sat images.

It feels like an Alpha release to me, I don't believe it was anywhere near ready for general release.

Wouldn't existing ipods, ipads, iphone etc have licenses for the old google maps app still aas they were sold with that funcionality. So only the latest ipod 5 and iphone 5 would not have that license? If that is the case then apple should release a new version of IOS 6 to restore the google version of maps to those devices that have that license. Or possibly they should get google to release a new standalone app. After trying the new maps on my ipad, it is a complete joke for NZ. The ipad has google earth, but that lacks many of the features of google maps, like streetview. I want to know the property numbers, and some of the aerial photos are still using old B&W photos.

Looks like I will stick with its 5.x until apple either fix this debacle or google maps appears as a standalone app (inc streetview)

I completely agree that there are problems and iOS Maps needs a ton of work, but just trying to temper the technosphere's outrage in comparison to the real-world every-day non-techie impacts.

Incorrect. Any app that used MapKit, which is what Google told you to use if you wanted to use Google Maps on iPhone, now uses Apple Maps for data. Basically, ALL apps are now using Apple's maps and it's crap. Entire roads are missing in Central Auckland, satellite imagery is unavailable at high zoom levels, and street view is just gone. Transit routing has vanished and replaced with a "buy these apps" (none of which are as good as Google at routing in NZ anyway).

Serious downgrade.

There's an app called "G-Whizz" which is basically all the Google functions in one package, including maps (albeit with an advertising strip across the bottom). It's not perfect but will do in a pinch. I've heard good things about Waze for navigation. Anyone tried it?

I used the maps app to get to a known location in Auckland and whilst it got me there, it took me the longest practical route and was about 100 metres out at the final destination.

I'll continue to use Tom Tom for my in car navigation needs

Apple are paying Google everytime someone uses the maps app, rather than paying for a license per device using it. Replacing the maps in iOS 6 is definitely for business reasons rather than functional reasons. I don't use the existing maps app much on the ipad, but will probably delay the update to iOS 6 for a while anyway.

Considering apple uses tomtom, you would think it would be the same. I guess the apple app can only get better. It probably couldn't be much worse. B/W aerial photos is a big fail IMOH.
