How I see it is you've got over 2yrs use out of an iPhone - just call it as a chance to move on and sell the phone on Trademe.

You won't get much on trademe if it has a fault. You can buy an iphone 4 new/refurbished for about $299, so you would be lucky to get $150 for one where wifi isn't working.

As we pay more for goods in NZ to get CGA protection, it is a process you can take.

This might be a long-shot, but does your router have a Transmit Power option? Mine does, and it is currently set to 100% but can be set lower. Perhaps there was a glitch that changed this option, assuming your router enable you to change this parameter.

You mention changing the orientation of the router at some point?
Changing it back would be the obvious first step.
Have you upgraded the firmware on the router?
My experience with my Thomson router was it performed the best when I put it in a large steel drum, poured in petrol and set it on fire. Toxic... but satisfying.

According to what I read today, there is also a 'greying out' of the wi-fi for some users using iOS 6 and above, which the release of 6.1 didn't fix, and fans have tried everything from putting their iPhones in a freezer to using a hair drier on them. I know it's not exactly the same as your problem, but it's worth knowing in case people want to hold off upgrading.

Seems to work OK with an iPhone 4 and 5 and an Airport base station, so probably no need to hold off upgrading if you have this set-up. I know this doesn't help the OP.

after much thought I think it's too much hassle to get it diagnosed and then being accepted for "repair" ... will probably take a year to get to that stage of acceptance even with CGA ...

might just have to use data until iphone 6 can convince us to upgrade or might switch the wife to android - trouble is she has many apps that she uses ... oh well

CGA or Vodafone have nothing to do with the software update YOU applied to YOUR phone.
You do not have a case for CGA, Factory reset your phone and it will fix your problem.
The first thing the repair agent will do is factory reset the phone, if it works they will send it back with a bill as it is not faulty.

I factory reset will undo the update.

1) used website to get apple to call me - asked to reset this, backup this, restore that - no good

Did you factory reset the phone or did you just do a restore?

What OS is on the phone now?

Also it is most likely a hardware fault.

Either way it can never be proven.

My wife's 4S had a similar problem. Nearly had to hold the phone within a metre of the router to be able to even see the SSID. And then it wouldn't even connect. Took it into a telecom store and they sent it away for repair. Ended up getting a replacement.
