freitasm: Obviously there's a lot more behind the scenes, but there's a point here... Anyone noticed the new "flat" is similar to the old "Windows Phone flat"?

My first thoughts on this are that the design looks like of like a combination of Meego and Windows Phone.

I haven't researched it thoroughly but I haven't really seen anything innovative yet. I don't mean to sound like I'm hating on Apple but it really does look like a catch up to me.

On a side note - I see the maps app icon no longer directs the user off the side of a bridge.

Was pretty disappointed. I've been on Android for a year now after a couple of years on iPhone/iOS.

I was hoping that this update would bring a few of things that I think iOS is really lacking compared on other platforms, and maybe lure me back.

1) Widgets/Live tiles type icons. After having this on my Android, I really think it's something iOS is lacking. Even if they don't want to go down the path of different sized widgets, you would at least think they could make the current sized icons dynamic. They are really lagging behind here.

2) Ability to set app defaults and replace default apps. Apple want very much to "Control the user experience", and to a degree I get that. And I don't think they really have to compromise on that by allowing third parties to release alternatives to the device defaults (Like browser, dialler, mail app, phone book etc). By carefully allowing apps to utilize service APIs, Apple could allow some more choice here whilst still retaining fairly good control of the UX. Coupled with their quality control process for approving apps this could work and would be great for consumers.

3) VoIP support. I had Nokia Symbian devices many years ago that had better VoIP support than an iPhone. Certainly my Android has great support. There are ways to kind of make VoIP work on iOS, but it's very messy. Ideally, there should be some integration with the dialler, at at least support for proper line registration to allow incoming calls. At present to get incoming VoIP calls, you have to essentially register your line on an external server, that then does a push notification to you phone, which upon acceptance will launch the app, connect to the line and then allow you to answer the call. However, in my experience - it's very difficult to make all of this happen before the call times out and goes to Voicemail. With LTE becoming more common and data caps on the increase, using VoIP in addition to, or instead of the cellular network for voice calls is quite viable.

This update to me feels more like a catch up visual refresh than anything else. Take out the design change from this announcement, and I really can't see anything of interest in the update. Apple is still a good year behind other platforms in my opinion. I think that Blackberry 10 is even further ahead in many ways (Maybe not apps tho), and that's saying something!

I was largely just a design change from what I can see, although they have added the android like notification/settings pull down to it, and the multitasking switcher. I think it looks good, but is just catchup. The design is also moving more to what googles own apps already look like.
It does make OSXs interface look dated, with the heavy shading. Would have thought they would have updated that.

I've just installed the beta on my 4S, and after 10 minutes of playing around with it I can't believe the new icon designs, Safari in particular looks like its been drawn with crayons.

Personally don't like the colours/icon styles of iOS, but I am looking forward to something different.
I am actually getting quite tired of the same old same old with iOS.

I noticed that they have introduced that overlay transparency that windows 7 and vista used to have, which I like, but MS removed from windows 8. The other cool feature looks to be that parallax background image that moves when you move the device. But there look to be many ideas that were already in android, and in many of googles own android apps.

Yep, Apple now exudes quality AND being behind. You read that everywhere. Cannot see that changing in the short term. Odd, as already recent iOS's have added long existing Android features, so why drip feed it?

Beats me. Oh well, swiping apps and toggles, thats good, maybe there will be a few little niceties I am not aware of.

I was reasonably impressed by it, just makes OSX and IOS6 look really dated. In fact I think it makes the iphones look a bit dated too. The really need a new thin iphone design for the next version. The current one just looks so fat with huge top and bottom borders.

Underwhelmed but it may be nice just for the sake of a UI change.

It is like getting your car a shiny paint jobI guess.

The quick settings screen is about the best thing but it makes you wonder why they never had this?

I was hoping for lastpass integration but I'm not sure that this allows it.

From reading around it seems like alot of people aren't too happy with iOS 's features and new design. I however think it is exactly what Apple needed and not a moment too soon. Although iOS 7 doesnt have breakthrough features, it would be nice for my iPhone to get a fresh look. The UI has been the same for an eternity and I have considered moving to another platform a number of times. Although im not for the bright kid-like colours, im still interested in experiencing something new on my beloved iPhone. I like apples customer service when it comes to updates, and it is probably this that keeps me hooked with them.

The features im most interested in are:
-Multitasking-yet another example of a tweak being available on jailbroken devices for years.
-AirDrop file sharing service
-iTunes Radio (although ill probably stick to Spotify)
-Better security for when your iPhone gets stolen

In no way am I an apple fanboy, but I have to say, the Keynote was pretty exciting. Pretty keen to get my hands on iOS 7 ASAP and give it a go. Any developers out there with a spare UDID slot that would be kind enough to let me try iOS 7? Hate to ask but I don't know if I can wait til September

You don't need to register a udid, just press shift+update to begin the install (once you've downloaded the file), it upgrades rather than restores iOS.
