The thing with Apple I find is that they tend to create a want for a product and market it as a need. If history is anything to go by, there is a huge market for people who will get the apple smartwatch simply because it will undoubtedly be a gorgeous device and Apple will make it seem like your life will be a complete drag without it.

And who knows, maybe it is and we just don't know it yet. I am usually in the anti-Apple camp btw, but that doesn't stop me from looking forward to something that is bound to be a beautiful thing.

I really am of 2 minds on the smart watch.

On 1 hand I am a geek and love the latest gadgets, now in my life I am in a place to afford them.

On the other hand I don't wear a watch and haven't in more years than I can remember.

I think the novelty if it would wear off quite quickly.

I think of other devices, my Ipad for example, when they came out they looked like a fad, but to be honest they have their purpose, my ipad's have actually replaced my home PC's.

IPhone/ Smart phone, I have had a mobile phone since the 1990's the iPhone just does so much more than the Nokia 5110 ever did.

The smart watch, google glass, I can't see what they are replacing that I already use.

I pretty much agree. They will sell reasonably well, to gadget wanters, to high expectation buyers, to the health focused. I think just the latter will keep them in constant use. Time will tell

I got to try Glass last year and I have to say that speaking for myself, besides all the other cool things it does I would buy Glass as a navigation device alone.  Okay that is what I will tell my husband it is for, but really what I want to do with it is play Ingress.

I suspect that the iWatch will be of little interest to those who are not into health & fitness. However as a regular half marathon runner this device could be fantastic for me. I have previously considered buying one of those specialised GPS watches for this purpose, but I don't want to mess around with cables and uploading to store the data.

Apple is very good at knowing what market segments to target new products at, so the rumours pointing to a health & fitness focus are probably on the money.

I believe the imminent release of Apple's wearable is why Samsung has sprayed so many models, form factors and uses at the tech consuming public in the last 12 months. Can't be injuncted if you were in the market first.

Other than that, relax, Apple will tell us why we need this new device ;-)

I have never been a watch person, I have pretty well much had a phone that could tell me time when needed since I can remember.  I picked up a Pebble smart-watch to have a "Play" with because our Home Automation App now integrates with the Pebble.  I was going to have a play, get the hang of it and pass it on to a new customer.....I still have it on my wrist and have now for months.  The test stage passed, the new toy stage passed, and I still find it a great piece of kit on my wrist.  I now use the watch to tell the time(who would of thought?), check emails/texts/incoming calls etc, and with the HA integration, can turn TV's on, change Sky channels, open doors, control lights and heat pump all without pulling the phone out of my pocket.

I will be one of the first to jump in line and get an iWatch, after having the Pebble, I am sold on smart-watches.

I wonder how much better than the Pebble the Apple offering will be? Can pretty much guarantee it will be $500+ when released, so twice as good as a Pebble?

Most of the medium to top end GPS watches don't need cables, the can sync via bluetooth with an app on your phone. Check out DCRainmaker.com. He's reviewed a lot of the sports tech and has a tool which you can use to compare each watches specs.

Thanks for confirming that. If Apple's announcement next week doesn't yield anything appealing then I will definitely look at that option.

I wonder if they do release a watch how heavily it will rely on "sport fitness health" to sell it ? I am guessing they will have to look at a more mainstream aspect to sell it. Oh! its exciting!! Like the night before Christmas!.............. and that is how they do it!

Two nights before Xmas! 10th NZ time.   I can only see sport/fitness/health buyers getting one. There will be a a few "it's a new gadget I want one" but its rumoured to be US$400 I read on Macrumors, so that will limit those that want one but have no use for one. The key will be how it sells after the first wave, as the subsequent waves will be  based on word of mouth, or lack of it.

Hmm... it would be interesting to see what Apple can bring to the fitness bench that isn't already available. I suspect they may include some fitness stuff, but will go for a completely different angle overall.

Resistance all the way! Now just imagine how Dick Tracy it would be to Ingress on a smart watch with a screen big enough to see what you're doing. I'd look like even more of a nerd than I already do :)
