Maybe I won't be getting an iPhone anytime soon.

The finance is almost $200 just in fees. The "insurance" is compulsory unless you are a home-owner and as I experienced before, it was utterly worthless when I was made redundant from my last role upending me into a pile of trouble.

Cash Price:                               $1,199.00
Establishment Fee:                    $90.00
Payment Protection Insurance:    $101.92

The other concern is how well they are sealed? if they are like any other mobile, they are designed to get saturated at a whiff of moisture.

I see Parallell Imported Ltd have dropped their price to $1199, seems reasonable considering you get a 1 year warranty with them. They have their own service department and I have noted the last couple of years their service has been great.

Took me about 4 hours to open one. They are pretty well sealed ;-) Of course it still has the usual inescapable holes for speakers and microphones and the few external buttons, which will obviously cause problems if you drop it in water.

I'd be worried if I were these companies, they are likely unlocking these phones illegally.

I never heard that unlocking a phone is illegal.

Using pirate ROM or firmware on a device is a different story.

I believe commercially unlocking a phone by copying and modifying copyrighted code is illegally under US law (which is the specified juristriction of the iPhone EULA)

While there are copyright exemptions for someone doing this to their personal phone, it specifically excludes commercial entities from performing and offering it. Not to mention they are most likely violating the license agreement of the software unlock (depending what exactly they're using), which specifically excludes commercial use of the code.

I brought a unlocked iPhone from Mid City in Auckland (Queen Street) where the old movie theatres used to be for $1050 inc gst

Put my SIM in and it just worked.

iPhone is awesome but I won't pay more than 900 for it... Better to import yourself because you can unlock 1.1.1 now

There is nothing stopping anybody ordering it through the Apple  US website via CC and importing .... im guessing with duty, GST and travel insurance you should be able get it here for around $800 - $850 ... and yes 1.1.1 has been successfully unlocked ... I have a 1.02 using the hackintosh method ... so at this stage cannot upgrade to 1.1.1 ... well it can be done but at risk ... im more than happy with my 1.02

With the small problem that they only ship to US addresses. So you need a contact in the US to ship to, who are willing to on ship to NZ.
