Just had a quick browse on TM and secondhand 5s, S5, HTC One M8 are all selling for around the $400 pricepoint, so right now the resale is better on an Android :P

Would be except for the fact the iPhone has had 6 months longer to depreciate (ip5 and S5 launched at similar pricepoints). As I said before you only have to look at the S6 vs iPhone 6 pricepoint. How can a phone thats been out 6 months longer have a higher value? Well its far more popular than the Samsung, the iPhone 6 actually increased in RRP since launch where the S6 went the other way..

Anyways what Apple does is perfect for 2 year upgraders like myself. Last three phones iPhone 4/5/6 have all held their value remarkably well at the 18 month to 24 month age range. Making upgrade almost free after handset discount on contract with VF

Hi guys.

I was reading the 6s Iphone thread and somebody mentioned that they have had their current Iphone for 1 year, and only sold it for $100-$200 less than what they paid.

I seem to remember the same thing happening to me when I had an Iphone (3GS I think) years ago.

Why is it that Iphones can nearly hold their value when selling second hand, but Android phones drop $100's of $$?

People shouldn't make too much out of extreme, isolated cases. Anyone who will pay a couple hundy less than the original RRP for a smartphone that has been used for a year is a rank idiot. I am sure such people exist in reasonable abundance but no one should run their lives on the basis that they will run into such people regularly as it suits them.

I've been quite closely monitoring IP6 prices on Trademe and generally speaking they are going for around 55 to 60% of their original, 2014 (prior to price increase) prices. In some instances (this is sellers being rank idiots) people have been able to buy at below 50% of RRP (e.g. there was someone who sold an IP6 64 GB for $600 BO - I just hope that one wasn't stolen). I do genuinely think buyers are starting to smarten up a bit more and people aren't paying as much as they used to. Christ, I can see a IPhone 6 64 GB that purportedly has warranty left and a Apple repaired screen that isn't selling for $750 BO. The selling price spread for this configuration (from what I have seen over the last week) was between $800 to 880.

Undoubtedly Iphones hold their second hand value a bit better than Androids and I think the major reasons are that the retail price almost never drops, that the phones age much more gracefully (and are far better supported as they age) than Androids, plus their generally greater desirability to a wider cross-section of people, be it for vanity-related or design advantages-related reasons.
