Dunnersfella: You appear to find fault... but offer nothing in the way of solutions.
Teeps, can you please provide solutions to this? Perhaps you're an importer of goods who offers international price parity with Chinese made goods similar to what Apple makes?

Haha, far from it, but I'm guessing I've hit a nerve with yourself as you're being so defensive!

I'm just a guy who moved to New Zealand nearly 6 years ago and have been surprised at the reasons people come up with for products costing so much more than other countries. I'm pretty certain its more to do with greed than it has to do with volume discounting.

Ummmm, our location has a factor in pricing, exchange rates, duties and taxes. And for many suppliers the NZ market is like a rounding error. Duuersfella is correct.

Teeps:
And there you go, almost like it's taken direct from the importers handbook of 'how to make the most profit out of your customers'

Having experience from importing to a similar market as NZ: Trust me, when you deal with american companies and you tell them the market is around 4 million, they don't ask you how high you want them to jump..

That said. Lets compare Apple prices in two more or less completely identical markets. And so that the importers greed don't factor in, lets look at the Apple Store.

Prices converted to NZD with todays exchange rate. NO = Norway, NZ = New Zealand.

iPhone 6S, 64GB
NO: $ 1193.22 excl. GST - $ 1491.53 incl. GST
NZ: $ 1216.52 excl. GST - $ 1399.00 incl. GST

iPad Air 2, 128 GB, Wi-Fi
NO: $ 912.13 excl. GST - 1140.16 incl. GST
NZ: $ 955.65 excl. GST - 1099.00 incl. GST

MacBook Pro 15" Retina, base model:
NO: $ 3160.85 excl. GST - 3951.06 incl. GST
NZ: $ 3216.52 excl. GST - 3699.00 incl. GST

So there is a difference. When you factor in GST of 15% in NZ and 25% in Norway, the prices are actually lower to consumer in NZ than in Norway. And Norway is a slightly larger market than NZ.

All you've really managed to prove there is the fact that the pre tax prices are higher in New Zealand by a good few percent as its the sales tax that makes the prices to the consumer higher in Norway.

It's ok, I get it, you guys are fine about prices being higher in New Zealand than in other countries. I understand that there are costs of getting products here and the market is smaller, but I still believe this reason is used as a wholesale excuse to keep prices higher than they need to be. That is of course just my opinion as someone who has not lived here all my life and been told that New Zealand is so difficult to get products to that you have to pay more for them.

Teeps, base price excluding local taxes

6S $23 about 2% higher
iPad $$43 about 4.5%
MBP $56 about less than 2%

Thats pretty close, minimal, inconsequential.

Back in the day the same argument existed, expensive Apple. My first was a 4S, I recall the Galaxy equivalent 16GB was about $20 cheaper than the 4S 16GB. If Apple screws so much margin on a metal quality product, why does the equivalent flagship phone that supposedly isn't using Apples excessive margin not selling at heaps less? Yes they do drop a couple of hundred two months later, so they screwed the Samsung fans for two months.?

And I go back to my annual iPhone and iPad (some years) were always a few bucks similar to the last one. My 6Plus was actually cheaper for the same storage last year.

Does the growing knowledge of the CGA have any effect? It probably does. Apple charges a fee for extended warranty, perhaps they evaluated the costs they are incurring, or choosing to incur because of the CGA, and are passing that on? My speculation only, no facts.

I'd accept that, if it wasn't for the price I paid for my 4S, 5, 5S were all really close. Really close. Same with the iPad 1,2, 3, Air.  My 6Plus was cheaper. Had Apple been winding me in every year as I pay more and more, I'd accept your comments, but for my history its been a flat line.

I'd say you've nailed it in the final sentence.
Importers want to make money, you don't want to give people that money.
Greed from them, greed from you.
I guess the nerve has been touched at your end for the last 6 years? Does awareness help dull the pain?

CYaBro:
Teeps:
nathan: NZ prices include a "free" extended warranty - the Consumer Guarantees Act

As someone who has an ongoing claim (6 months and counting) with the NZ importer (via the shop I purchased from) for a faulty part on my mountain bike I discovered within 10 days of owning the bike, I think the extra price they're charging to cover the Consumer Guarantees Act is going straight into the pockets of these companies, as this one for certain seems to think this does not apply to them!

Apple are actually really good at covering work under the CGA, no questions asked or pressing them for the coverage is needed.
Even when the device wasn't purchased direct from Apple.

We have had a number of devices in for repair that are well outside their 1 year standard warranty and when we process the repair with Apple they covered them under NZ Consumer Law.  Nothing special had to be done by us or the customer, Apple just did it.

I agree CYaBro, Apple does really well in the warranty department.

Then import it yourself.
I imported my first Mac Mini Server from B&H Photographic that way. And since then the USA shipping has become a lot easier (NZ post, BuyUSA.com, etc)

You also need to add in the value of the consumer guarantees act.
US prices are also typically shown without local/state/federal taxes added, so you need to factor that into price comparisons too.

No black friday deals from Apple this year.

Looks like they are getting greedy.

you should just disputes tribunal them

making you wait 6 months to fix a 10 day old brand new item is BS

This is the main problem with the much-lauded CGA. It makes you fight and argue about words like 'reasonable'.

Revamping it to delineate specifically what that means would help a lot - or including a damages clause that says that if someone ends up having to argue a claim and wins, the company that refused to deal with it properly has to pay the consumer an additional $1000 to reflect their time wasted in dealing with the claim that ought to have been just settled.

I don't know why, but US companies almost always look for ways they can fix your problem and NZ companies seem to prefer to look for ways not to fix it in many (but not all) cases.
