MattD: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/23/pre_paid_iphone_3g_customers_may_pay_600_for_handset_report.html
"Approximately one out of every ten iPhone 3G buyers are likely to be international pre-paid subscribers who'll find themselves paying in excess of $600 for the touch screen handset, according to a new report."

Although VFNZ looks to be not offering pre-paid.. it might give an indication to handset pricing.

With Vodafone italy selling the phone unsubsidised for 499 euros and reports that AT&T are subsidising the cost of the phone by US$235 then ~US$600 for the cost of the 8GB model isn't unrealistic.

There are some reports that the 3G model is costing Apple as little as US$100 to produce. That's a fantastic profit margin!

That may be true, but I imagine the R & D side of things isn't calculated in that cost. I would imagine that those costs would be massive given the number of people involved and the length of time taken. Manufacture and materials is just a small part of the overall cost.

They don't have unlimited data, which was the talking point of this Engadget article.

I'm pretty sure I'll be using this to the max on 3G speeds everyday... blowing 2GB would be easy even on the iPhone.
