When I was talking to friend about it the other day, he said "Yes, it is expensive, but when you consider what is the one thing you use daily, to check your bank, take pictures, emails, web, music, reading, etc., is it not worth the cost? ..." - now this logic may not resonate with everyone, but I think he has a bit of a point - but with all that said, I still find myself not quite amped to drop the money.

I can afford any phone. I used to upgrade every year, sometimes in the queue. I was a fanboy. I have an X ONLY because I am now caregiver of my 14yo grand daughter, so I gave her my 6 Plus for her birthday. Only to see the joy on her face. I cant tell you what the latest models are or the features. Likewise I dont upgrade my washing machine every year to get the latest colours on the Wash cycle LED.

They used to say the best business was food as everyone has to buy it. Same goes for phones :-) Its silly, but its true!

I realise there is no right or wrong when it comes to fashion, but wearing an apple watch is akin to wearing a casio calculator watch. I joke mock a friend who bought one.

I just don't understand that kind of thinking...an Apple Watch (like any smart watch) has multiple uses for multiple reasons...and people are prepared to pay a lot of money for these devices - just look at what people pay for the Tag Heuer Modular Connected.

To be disparaging of a device like an Apple watch on a tech forum says quite a lot more about you than it does about those that wear them...

Fashion. Yes, its cool to have the latest iPhone and show it off. I actually find that embarrassing. I upgraded once, the iPhone was the same external site so popped in my old folio case. Im happy. Dont need anyone else to now. I love the integration, so Im happy.

Historically I have always upgraded my iPhone every two years. I currently have an 8 Plus that I bought when they were released last year, and I expect that by the end of 2019 I will want to upgrade to an iPhone X type of design.

My Apple Watch is a series II, so it's coming up to two years old. The watch is important to me for tracking my running which is my main hobby, and I would quite like to have 4G connectivity to check messages when I am out on long runs. However even if the NZ telcos announce support for the 4G Apple Watch it's unlikely that I will upgrade it within the next year as it doesn't make sense from a cost/benefit perspective.

... because I am bored of it. And, I like OLED, and it will be free.

How does one get a FREE iPhone!?

eracode: I live on and for my iPad and use it for pretty much everything - it’s my constant companion. It’s an Air 2 and nearly four years old - but it has been a great device.

I have the go-ahead from the Domestic Planning Dept to get a new one and I was disappointed when the recent Apple presentation finished without the expected announcement of new iPads.

It now looks likely that they will be announced next month and I’ll be in for the Pro 10.5” (or equivalent in the new screens with smaller bezels etc) - probably 256GB.

The DPD has a 2017 10.5” Pro and it’s noticeably nicer/better than my Air 2 - so I’m looking forward to leap-frogging her.

Always good to blend with the DPD/Home Office!

One thing to consider is that devices are lasting longer and with Apple's policy of providing updates and upgrades for up to 5 years combined with the recent optimisations in iOS that bring life to older iPhones then I see the upgrade cycle for many slow down - the iPhone Xs and Xr sounded like they were devices focused at the iPhone 6s (and to a lesser extent iPhone 7) than at the iPhone 8/iPhone X users but that being said I'm looking out to see what Google does with its hardware launch in October - whether it'll be an American only launch of whether Google realise that there is world beyond the borders of the United States. I think the focus that Apple needs to switch to is developing their cloud services etc. and move it from merely being a tick box along with putting a lot more focus on bringing Webkit on macOS and iOS into sync so that Webkit on both platforms are uniform in implementation rather than some features being found on Webkit for iOS but not in macOS and vice versa.

That function alone is fairly useful on the apple watch especially if you are a photographer and want to take photos during twilight hours, or if you are simply traveling.

I abandoned the iPhone about 3 years ago and have not missed it.

I would not change the iMac on my desk for anything other than another iMac. My iPad Pro would be ideal if it ran OSX instead of iOS but it's a reasonable laptop replacement, which is what I use it as when travelling. I use a Logitech keyboard and almost never use it's touch screen except when left with no choice.

I don't think I will be returning to the iPhone unless they do something truly revolutionary. Having the fastest chip possible in a phone is something that seems unnecessary and superfluous. Having animated emojis is probably funny when you are 15 but 4 decades later, not so much. Other than that, it has nothing Android handsets do not have already for the most part - and in many instances, have had for a very long while.

Ditto. We ran our 2 x iPhone 4 into the ground so we got a good 7 years out of them. We then upgraded to 2 x iPhone 7 on release. Ran my iPad 2 into the ground, so again got a good 7 years and have just upgraded to iPad 6. My partner is still running an iPad mini 2 so now 5 years old and no iOS dates now but it is just used for eBooks and word games so will properly have that till it dies an honourable death. Had an iMac 2007 model till 2013 and upgraded to iMac 27".

We have always paid full price as opposed to a payment plan. But our next iPhone (each) at the way Apple prices are going will properly be on a 24mth plan.

These things are like cars, you either keep updating every 2 to 3 years or you run them into the ground, which for us as you can see, is about 7 years. We only really only upgrade because they stop working (never has happened) or because the app's are no longer updated for the old hardware or the app's are becoming so slow because of the old hardware. As has been mentioned Apple supports their devices far longer than Android AND they are more secure (mostly).

Because we are an Apple centric household, particularly due to Calendar, Contacts, iTunes, iBooks and photos (and soon ATV) we will stay with Apple even if they continue with their Rolls Royce prices.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Like you had MacBook and iPad and Android phone for years. Then got iPhone X when it came out last year - mainly because I really like the integration/sync across the three devices when I take photos on the phone. We travel a lot and using the phone as my camera means taking less gear away. Not to mention sync of everything else.

I wouldn’t go back to an Android phone but in my ideal world I would like iOS running on the beautiful hardware and form factor of something like a Galaxy S9 or Note 9.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I agree. I'd also like to have a hardware choice AND an OS choice.
I'm a photographer so there's never an option to leave my gear at home. For me, the camera on a phone is of little interest and rarely used.

From what I understand the upgrade cycle in the US is typically 2 years, because that is the typical term length on carrier sponsored and/or down payment phones.

I was waiting for the Max, so kept my 7 for 2 years and could have easily kept using it.

Having the larger screen of the Max is really nice. Don’t regret not getting the X when it was launched.

I'd be open to Android if Google realised that the New Zealand exists so then I could purchase a Pixel phone. The reasons I don't give alternatives to Pixel a try? because of my bad experiences with Samsung, the reported lacklustre after market care by Huawei (lack of a timely updates and upgrades), HTC/Sony are at death's door and Nokia hasn't got a flag ship phone in New Zealand. I'll see what happens in October but I'm not optimistic that Google will get their act together - if Apple can launch in 50 markets in 2 weeks then I think that Google can do the same.

Snapchat and Insta took over.... people are now all about app based social showing off.

I used to be such an Apple fan 'Girl' years ago. I used to wait with anticipation to see what the latest model would bring. I pretty much gave up on IOS after the Iphone 7. I purchased one then sold it. At that time I was running two phone's. Apple and Android, mostly for troubleshooting due to my job etc.

I finally gave the ghost on IOS after the 7. I don't see any value in their software and the device itself and don't see how they can create anything innovative any more. For that reason I'm purely Android now.
