You really believe this is possible? Remember prices in the USA market do not include local/state tax. Then add our GST, import tax, margins, and there isn't a way to get the same prices. "Equivalent prices" mean all those added to the tag.

At the end of the day you're buying a product with a RRP of ~$1300 so its up to you to decide wheather you let VF subsidies the initial investment or not. You're forking over ~$1300 one way or another on top of whatever plan you do or don't decide to sign up to.

Well put. VF have a cost to recover and margin to make. Either they offer cheap phones on expensive plans or expensive phones on reasonable plans.

Question someone might know the answer to. I got a 3g on 2 year contract and know I paid a "premium" in each monthly payment. That 2 years is up and the monthly payments are the same. Am I getting ripped? Shouldn't the monthly plan thiny drop once the contract is up, or do they just assume you will get a new phone every 2 years?

If this is the case then why are VFNZs plans so absurbly priced and so pitifully featured in comparison to ones from australian Telcos?

And why is the iPhone so much more subsidised there?

I wouldnt mind paying a decent whack if the contract is decent but the iPhone plans are pretty pitiful.

On the other hand i wouldnt mind paying around the US prices with these crap contracts and just pay extra fees for more data, minutes etc.

To be honest i just dont buy the "it costs more here" from vodafone.

In my opinion, they see the iPhone as a cash cow to be milked. This is fine in moderation but in comparison to other Telcos internationally it is just poor.

Lets hope this doesnt get moderated out and we get some pertinent discussion on why the kiwi consumer is getting shafted.

When Vodafone initially announced they were getting the iphone I remember they described it as a 'premium' product and it would be priced as such.

Pretty simple really, in AU there's more than one telco with it and they're all fighting for customers. Over here VF and TC just sit in their castles and just capitalise on each others stuff ups.

I'm sure we'll, yet again, be "surprised" by VF's pricing...

Expansys is selling the 16 gb for just over $1250.. Excluding gst.. and shipping.. My guess is vodafone's pricing will reflect this

It cracked me up how the VF crew were still pushing that promotion so hard when it barely had a month left to run on it, also unsure how i'd get the time (or interest) to send 30+ pxt's a day...

Is anyone else considering Japan as an option. Their 16gb iphone 4 is 46,080 yen or $728 nzd - no contract, no carrier limits.

ATM vodfone is selling the 3gs 16gb on a $80 month plan for 2 years for $699. I doubt they would sell the new phones any cheaper than the 3gs, which makes the buying outright through Japan look fairly attractive.

I have a mate in Japan, gets back to NZ 1 July, I'll see if he can get me one. Would be kinda cool to be one of the first :-)

Not sure what supply is like in JP tho... here hoping.

i will be really surprised if the prices arent the same (or +- $100) as the original iphone 3g prices when they came out

$799 with 2 year contract $80 a month
$1399 for just the phone.

i wont be upgrading straight away, the reception issues need to be sorted, "hold it different or buy a case" isnt really good enough.

ill get the iPad (probably 32gb 3g model) and keep my iphone 3g for now, my contract ends july 12, so ill just wait and see.
