My iPod Touch had previously been v3.1.2 and jailbroken so it multi-tasked quite nicely and I was able to completely customise the springboard.

When I installed iOS4 on my iPod Touch I lost multi-tasking, got the boring black UI and can't change anything...and the only thing added was folders. I couldn't even do wallpapers on the springboard.

Disappointment ensued. Steve Jobs...I wanted more than folders for running the slower iOS 4 and losing almost 200MB of additional flash disk space.

I tried the jailbreakme.com jailbreak and it didn't work at first....but I worked out why and how to make it go. I wrote a blog post on it here, in case anyone else is having trouble jailbreaking iOS4.0 on their iPod Touch. My iPod Touch is an "MB" model bought in December 2008.

I just used jailbreakme.com from my Safari browser to do the deed.

Failed first time around but after a quick reset and restart, I was away laughing.

Now havea 32gb 3GS on iOS4 - jailbroken, running a couple of things that make the phone look different, but it hasn't blown my mind so far.

Used redsn0w 0.9.5 to jailbreak 4.0.1 a a week or so ago.

Pretty easy as usual.

Ended up jailbreaking after all. Installed SBSettings and Lockinfo. Haven't had lockinfo before but wow this is a great app. Lets you display alerts on your lockscreen making it non-useless.

I also did it for MyWi but will be saving the trial period for a conference later this month.

I got MyWi 4.0 on my iPhone 3GS and tethering internet with my iPad as well. It's a very cool application but too pricy so I end up using the cracked version instead(work beautiful through) Just love it...

This isnt working on an ipod touch 8gb.
I slide it accross, it goes to the leopard background, then exits to the main home screen.

I powered it off and powered it back on and tried again, still no go.

Well...the one app that has made me realise the beauty of the Jailbreak is "Screen Dimmer"...you set a pre-determined time for the backlight to dim (and then go off) without the need for the screen to be set to lock at that point...one of the biggest frustrations I have had with the iPod Touch and iPhone.

For this free app alone, the Jailbreak was worth it.

I'm not seeing the utility in that. Can you give an example where it is useful?

Running something like iPod app or Tunein Radio, where you want instant access to the app without having to unlock your device, but don;t want the screen blazing away wasting battery power...it's ideal when using an FM transmitter etc in the car...dim the screen, don't lock it.

Sounds good. I have found that even with multi-tasking via jailbreak / backgrounder, if I let the iPod Touch go into lock mode, the streaming radio app ("Wunderadio") almost always gets killed a few minutes later.

The dimmer would prevent that from happening as the device can be set not to lock....and the screen will dim.

Awesome! Ta.

It's the one thing I always disable on a phone - autolock, but on an iPhone it means the backlight remains on in full glory - the battery suffers as a result. Same for iPod Touch.

Personally, this makes the iPhone almost exactly what I want/need, now!
